Dell Inspiron 1720

    The laptop is just out of warranty and will not charge. The BIOS does not detect the charger. The laptop went from perfect to not detecting the charger instantly, with no faults before this. I tested the charger and it is outputting the correct voltage and there is current flow. Anyone have any ideas?

    Might be the AC connector on the laptop.

    I removed it and tested it, all is good.

    I'm not sure about this, but I don't think it's simply a matter of supplying the correct voltage. I think the adapters may have a chip which the laptop recognizes. Can you try another adapter?

    Dell have replaced a hard drive for me before even though it was just out of warranty, call them.

    I said the AC connector not the AC Adapter.

    The AC connector is the AC port soldered on the motherboard. its a common failure on laptops as it flex's over time. Its also a common repair, most repair shops will quote you for it.

    I tested the AC connector and power gets to the correct pins to feed to the motherboard.

    The problem I'm suggesting is the solder attaching the AC port to the motherboard. I don't see how you could have tested that without taking the laptop apart. Did you look at the youtube links?

    I took the laptop apart, only way to get to the ac connector.

    I didn't get that from your comments.

    Well if its not the charger and its not the connection. That leaves the board itself. Can't help you with that.

    I'd double check with another charger and 1720 if you can find shop selling used ones.
