E3 2014

Rather than wading through all the console exclusives in the Games forum thread, I thought we should have our own E3 thread here in PC Gaming. Not that we're expecting many PC exclusives of course... Civ: Beyond Earth, and um...? And a lot of the games I had been looking forward to have been delayed (The Division, Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3).

And despite my cynical belief that E3 is nothing more than an opportunity for devs and publishers to lie to their customers :pac:, it's still a big deal, even if for no other reason that being a grotesque freak show. And there's always the small outside chance that something will come out of nowhere and surprise you. Yeah right.

Anyway, feel free to post any tidbits, news, links etc here.

Palmer luckey from Oculus is meant to be demoing something new during the EA talk

The Division and The Crew are my big Ubisoft interests, really wanna see if they have fixed up the driving for The Crew as havent heard great things so far. For the Division its the graphics worry off the back of the Watch Dogs fiasco. Plus whatever new IP they have.

MS and Sony i just like watching the fight and have no real intention of picking up either of their wares now Steam have released the streaming update.

Also interested in what EA might have new IP wise and of course Mirros Edge 2

I'm interested in Battlefront 3 and The Division. I have no faith in either releases being in anything even remotely close to a "functional" state when they do eventually come out though and EA and Ubi only have themselves to blame for that.

I'm also curious to see where Oculus are with their development now that they've had a chance to figure out what to spend their filthy Facebook money on :D And just for comparison, I'm curious as to where Project Morpheus is in its lifecycle.

Forbes have also put together a list of events, and links to them.

Yep, very interested in Oculus' showing. Hoping for a PC flavoured surprise from EA (next Madden maybe) too, as well as more Evolve coverage (please show another feckin' monster!).

Not sure if Firaxis are going to be there or not, but i'd like to see more of the new CIV, and of course anything from Bioware :)

coverage starts at around 5.30 i believe, should be an interesting few days for sneakpeaks and announcments, and the inevitable disappointments

Good point about Oculus, keep forgetting about it. Really hope this Zenimax shenanigans doesnt **** it up too much. Wonder if CCP might show up with some more Valkyrie for everyone to see?

We'll probably see Dragon Age: Inquisition stuff from Bioware.

undoubtedly, but i've also heard that they're showing a "new game", wether that's true or not remains to be seen. Apparently they are working on a new IP as well as the next Mass Effect game, so if they do show something new it may not even be ME.

    Fingers crossed though :)

Yeah, Civ: BE will be there alright. If you can't find a listing, I think they're under 2K rather than Firaxis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,761 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

The thing i hate about 2K are those monkeys they have in front of the camera at things like these.
If you've ever watched them stream before you'll know what i mean when i say they are clueless non-gamers who are just there for a paycheck so they pretend to know what they're talking about until a dev intervenes and sets them straight.

I watched a few when they were talking about XCOM, and its expansion EW. None of those people ever even played the game before they started waffling on about it. It was so bad I was embarrassed for them! Talk about cringe, jaysis..

Interested to hear what Rockstar have planned for the new game,2015 release seemingly and hope to get a reveal of what it is at least. Personally hoping its Red Dead Redemption sequel. Couldnt care less about GTA V coming to PC.

Also Bethesda to make an announcement on Fallout 4.

The Division as well, really want more info on it. And see a bit more footage, the premise is great imo just hope they can pull it off

Other than that im just hoping to be surprised by announcements regarding the PC as a platform and that theres at least a few things in there not already expected and that are exciting

Nothing amazing so far. Lots of CGI trailers and sequels. At least CoD and BF look a little different to each other this year.

The Division's trailer was great, but again, all CGI. The Crew could be great.

And nothing from Microsoft for PC gamers, quel surprise.

Trust me, if Ms could, they would wipe the whole pc gaming in a second.

So I am not surprised Ms shows,l no love to us.

Why would MS show anything for PC gamers? Theres nothing in it for them. They never show anything PC

I didn't expect them to, because, well, Microsoft. Hence the "quel surprise".

But they've been recently banging the "PC is a great gaming platform we're fully going to support" drum. Loudly. I'm just pointing out their usual BS.

Oh and GTAV finally confirmed for PC, at the end of the year.

    Witcher 3 I want now.Nuff same.

Arkham Knight is more of the same but seeing all of the previous Arkham games were awesome, that's not a bad thing.

GTA 5 finially. I did love Rockstar's dig at Watch Dogs with the PS4 gameplay caption during the demo and in fairness it looked a hell of a lot better than Ubisoft's effort imho.

The Division looked interesting but after the bull**** Ubisoft pulled with Watch Dogs it's deffo a wait till reviews are in job.

Assassin's Creed Unity looks good but just didn't grab my attention like Blag Flag did.

The Crew looks really interesting and I'll be keeping an eye on it.

The teaser trailer for Dreadnought, a game which puts you in command of a massive carrier style spaceship.

    We've no idea of the gameplay style they're going for, but it's being developed by Yager (Yager, Spec Ops: The Line) and published by GreyBox (the forthcoming Grey Goo). The blurb from Yager;
Take command of massive capital spaceships, fighting on beautiful planet surfaces or in orbit within the title’s core competitive multiplayer suite and explore the solar system in the episodic, single-player, story-driven campaign.

Either way, more sci-fi driven PC gaming is good to see after being a neglected genre for so long.

Is that Destiny game coming to PC? Gods it looks so average and bland to me, I don't know how they're gonna make their supposed $500m back on it, but no doubt the console serfs will lap it up cause they don't know any better. It looks to me like a mashup of Warframe, Borderlands and Planetside 2.

There are no plans for a PC launch at the moment. I remember being disappointed with that when I heard it. Not currently disappointed. :pac:

this is from their FB page
Players take command of massive capital ships in the sky within the title’s core competitive and cooperative multiplayer suite and its episodic, single-player, story-driven campaign. Distinguished by a range of classes, subclasses, and varied progression paths, each warship is a force to be reckoned with, bristling with dynamic armaments and fully customizable to make your opponents crumble beneath the might of your bow.

These guys seem to be on a mission to bring back the glory days of true single player campaigns to RTS's

Nice to hear an Irish voice on the coms of the big capital ship at the end.

So often with non-US or English characters they're some stupid caricature.

If it's even remotely as crap and dark as doom3 i think i'll pass, and judging by the trailer that's exactly what it'll be

I liked Doom 3. Thought it was very atmospheric and it got the adrenalin pumping. I thought it missed the big lockers full of Imps in the original games so hopefully they will address that. Heard good things about Wolfenstein so looking forward to it. Having said that I found Rage a disappointment, mainly due to the crap driving.

ID are bloody great at doing shadows, atmosphere and scaring the **** out of you.

I'm not sure how that fully translates into a flagship FPS title though.
These days you need to have some sort of hook that sets it apart and generally a bunch of RPG stuff in there as well.

The hook in Rage was the aforementioned crap driving and the RPG stuff was pretty weak indeed.
It's a shame, because other than that and the buggy graphics, there's a lot to be said for it.

The monsters are cool, how they moved was more interesting than most of what their contemporaries were trying (swingin' off bars and ****), some of the guns were a bunch of fun (especially the DLC nail gun) and when you were standing still at least, it looked stupidly pretty.

In all likelihood, it won't be so bad as to be best avoided, but you'll probably want to wait for the Steam sale 18 months after it's released.

Seems a bit of a departure - 3rd person cover shooter to giant spaceship combat sim.

It's definitely something there isn't enough of. It's mad to think that we had X-Wing, Tie Fighter and all that jazz 20 years ago and there hasn't been a whole lot since they stopped doing that, never mind something on a grander scale.

I'll definitely be watching this closely. The next few years could have a lot of really good spaceship combat between the redone Homeworld series (and maybe a sequel), Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, that first person space RTS I saw recently where you're a guy standing on the bridge of your fleet's flagship and now this as well.

Some pre-alpha footage of Dreadnought (it's narrated in German)

    the translation
The Berlin based developer Yager announced Dreadnought, a Free 2 Play Space Shooter that will release next year. If you cringed upon hearing Free To Play, rest assured that Yager doesn't go for an ominous Pay To Win Model, but would rather expand the World with the Community. We're not allowed to go into more detail, but Yager's Explanations sounded quite fair and thought through.

Dreadnought plays about 500 years into the future, after a war between two major factions battling for the various resources of the Solar System. We're not part of either faction, but are instead Outcasts that turned their back on the war, to save the lives of their crew.

We aren't Lone Wolfs though, since we can ally ourselves with other players and create Alliances. Team play is the focus in general, if you're going at it alone, you've pretty much lost.

All in all, there will be 5 different Types of Ships, each one sporting several variants. The Destroyer is a relatively classic warship, whereupon the Artillery Cruiser works as some kind of Sniper, the Corvettes as well as the healing-centric Tactical Cruiser, are the smallest and most agile Classes and are best suited to Guerrilla Warfare. Last but not least, there are the eponymous Dreadnoughts. Unbelievably large Battleships with an equally impressive Firepower, as we can see here right now.

The combat plays appreciably different. Instead of fast paced action, the spaceships move and control according to their Size and demand the skillful use of their respective Special Abilities. Using the Corvettes, you'd best remain in constant motion, while the Artillery Cruisers pick a place away from the Battlefield. The Destroyers and Dreadnoughts are relatively slow, so you're usually trying to get the enemy to fly into a broadside. The maneuvering into perfect Battle positions is reminiscent of the Sea battles in Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag.

All in All, each Class has 4 different abilities, as well as primary and secondary Cannons, so you can adapt to any combat situation, which offers an enormous tactical depth. Additionally, you can manage your Power Levels, to increase your shields for example. Despite the rather slow game speed, Dreadnought shines with a lot of Action that feels weighty and authentic.

It's too early for a real estimation, but Dreadnought has a lot of potential.

I like the idea of slower, naval type combat in space. Used to love seeing the Destroyers in Homeworld 2 turn to fire their broadside guns.
