Vandals smashed car window!

    Hi everyone,

Someone took it upon themselves to smash my drivers side window during the night. Nothing taken etc so I'm assuming just mindless vandalism. Was in my driveway too! Anyways, my insurance won't cover it since I'm 3rd party so am just going to have to get it fixed myself.

Problem is it's quite expensive and I'm not getting paid for another 5 days! Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do in the meantime? I just want something that I can see through and will be waterproof. I tried to see if I could get a sheet of plexiglass but turns out that is quite expensive too. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Depends what you have lying around I suppose. Happened to me before and my father was able to fashion a sort of makeshift window of out of two sheets of clear plastic that we had in the garage and screwed them together in such a way that they held in place in the window until I could get the glass sorted.

If I got one from the scrapyard, I would still need someone to fit it in for me, I'm assuming this is probably the reason for high cost of getting it fixed?

not necessarily. new glass can be expensive, second hand glass can be much much cheaper.

most glass whether a front wind shield or a passenger window can be fitted within an hour or less, provided the car isn't too elaborate so fitting should be cheap enough.

I haven't a clue on these things, could you give me an estimate on say how much it would cost if I could get a replacement from the scrapyard? And how much to fit then? I've been quoted about 150e for the replacement from a garage. Until Friday, I only have about 50 euro to spare

What make, model and year of car is it ?

    Where are you based ?

Try ringing a scrapyard in your area and see if they have something suitable. There may be a video on youtube to help you get it fixed, or any back street garage or panel beater should have it fitted for you for a few quid.

If its a drivers door window then it should be pretty easy to fit the glass (a mechanically minded mate should be able to assist). I dont think it needs to be sealed or anything like a windscreen does.

Not sure how much it would cost from a scrapyard; ring around and get some prices.
