    1. What is your budget?
    €1400-1600.

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
    Gaming/rendering.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes/No]
    Yes windows 8.1.

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?
    Monitor.

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes/No]
    No

5a. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
1920 x 1080, yes want to get a 120/144 refresh rate monitor in the near future.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.]
    Keyboard
    Mouse.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [Yes/No]
    Yes.

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]
    Laser.

    9. When are you purchasing? [In x days]
    7-14 days.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]
    Don't require help.

So my own initial build is this. Plan is to go with Komplett, since I don't want to go through the hassle of hardwareversand. Unfortunately can't post a screen cap of the build so....

    Zalman Z11 Case - 61
    Corsair 600 watt power supply - 65
    i7 4770k - 300
    MSI Z87-G43 - Socket 1150 - ATX - 90
    ASUS GeForce GTX780-DC2OC-3GD5 - 3GB - PCI-E - 450
    Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB - PC3-19200 - DIMM - 150
    Crucial M500 480 GB SSD - 210
    DVD burner - 18
    Razer DeathAdder - 70
    Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 keyboard - 140
    Reddit Software swap, windows 8.1 - 10-20

    Total = €1560.

My current thoughts are if everything is at least compatible and there are no obvious issues I've missed?

Secondly, keyboard is looking a bit expensive, but never had a mechanical one, is it worth it? Was thinking maybe could save around a 100 between cheaper keyboard and ram and maybe go for a 780ti?

Thirdly, how would I go about software swap? Get the key, download windows, burn it to a disc, install it when I'm at the bios, same as a regular OEM version of windows?

Any money saving advice would be great too.

Thanks for any advice really appreciate it :)

Would you not be aiming for the newer z97 boards and an I7 4970k.

Are they available now? I don't think Komplett has them yet from what I've seen.

Komplett have some Z97 boards alright, but the CPUs aren't released yet. Next few weeks I think?? They don't seem to stock this SSD yet either, but Crucial have a newer drive out - the MX100. The 512GB version is faster, bigger and cheaper than the M500.

Ah I see, will definitely wait then. Thanks for the SSD tip aswell man.

I am thinking of picking up one of the i7 4790K processors at the moment, haven't been able to find any online yet though. I have been doing a bit of reading and the commentary seems to hint that Intel are making them available slowly because they are not under any major pressure from AMD. Most people think they will be coming in stock towards the end of this month.

Are there any hints of when Nvidia are bringing out a replacements for the gtx 780/780ti? I've been out of the loop with PC components for a while now, but think they've been out about 6 months now if I'm right? Is that about when talk of new cards will be coming around or is there a while to go yet?

Actually looks like they've been out for over a year.

The GeForce 800 / Maxwell series was meant to be out towards the beginning of this year but there still is no concrete release date. It could be another few months yet, there have been rumors of some production problems that is pushing back the release date.

You not go amazon? I read somewhere komplett have gone a bit downhill. And if that is true might as well go with hwvs.

Normally I'm meh for waiting around. But you intend to overclock and the I7 4970k is stock at 4 GHz. Cooler and better overclocking potential than the 4770k. And not much price difference.

So if it is just a few weeks be worth the wait.

Yeah 780 will run you about 450 euro, 780 ti 550.
Unless you are gaming at 4k ,forget the 780 ti.

New nvidia proper Maxwell 800 series is mentioned 2015.

Hmmm all this is definitely making me consider waiting for a few months, pretty disappointing really haha.

I thought Amazon don't deliver electronic products to Ireland? Or used to not deliver? Yeah probably going to wait now.

2015? Seems a bit far away actually.

Amazon have started delivering electronics to Ireland alright. There are some decent UK online stores you might prefer to deal with rather than HWVS (I'm wary of Komplett now myself)? OcUK are popular for example (though not with me lol).

Full fat Maxwell rumours are all over the place. A recent article I read somewhere (can't remember where now, or I'd link it) reckons production will start soon now that TSMC's 20nm production is no longer exclusive to Apple. They suggested the end of this year for Maxwell, but again, just speculation.

It is enough for me to change my own build plans though - I'll go ahead and buy in August/September regardless, and if Maxwell isn't out by then, I'll get another decent card as a placeholder.

They do and I suggest you set up a parcel motel account, it's very simple and straight forward to do.

    http://www.parcelmotel.com/

Even if I am buying directly from a UK site who will deliver to the ROI. I will still usually give my parcel motel address, because of the savings that you can make on postage costs ect.

I know how it feels, I used to always get sucked into the 'wait a couple more months' feeling. To be honest though if you need a system now then I wouldn't hesitate to make a purchase now, there is always something new around the corner. You could be waiting quite a while for the Maxwell series.

I would seriously consider the 4790K if I were you, but only because it has been officially released and will be arriving into stock over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the advice everyone very helpful.

I'm thinking the same Sierra, will wait the few weeks for the 4790k, and try to sell the gtx780 if the maxwell series comes out sooner than expected.

Seen the 4790k in stock at hwvs. So keep an eye out.

Good stuff, that's a bit of a relief because I have read that retail availability could be delayed until September.

Does anyone else have any information on the expected retail availability? I sent Dabs.ie a message and they got back to me to say that they are expecting them in towards the end of this month but that's not confirmed.

OcUK are shipping them now apparently.

Still only marked as pre-order on the site it seems.

A lot of sites are listing June 25th as the day they will get them in stock.

Been and gone I'm afraid. You'll have to wait for the next batch.

Anybody know if you'll need one of the new Z97 mother boards for the new i7 4790k? Or would I be OK with a older z87 since they're cheaper?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 537 ✭✭✭Yeti Beast

Most Z87 boards will work with 4790K after a BIOS update, but you'll need to check the mobo manufacturer's website to be sure.

Thanks man, was looking around more and saw some cheaper z97 boards so I'll just go with one of those.

Was wondering if anybody has an idea of the performance improvement of an i7 over an i5 in general? We talking 30-50%? Might just go with an i5 if not.

Best case is 25-30% faster, for extremely well threaded workloads. For games there's often no difference between i5 and i7 if they're clocked the same.

Thanks, thinking I'm going to just go with an i5 since the video rendering I do isn't too often, just casual fun stuff really.

Thanks for this, should have said it sooner. I'm probably going to go with Amazon since Komplett's stock just isn't up to scratch.

You could also get the xeon e3 1230 v3 which is basically an i7 4770 for the price of an i5.

I personally wouldn't be buying from Amazon, or any other UK based operation with sterling so strong at the moment. You'll save a packet buying in euro from the continent.

It seems that most online retailers are getting them into stock today / tomorrow.

EDIT: Dabs.ie have them in stock now, just placed my order.

Was just looking at them there thinking of buying the build until I saw their prices, seem kind of expensive?

Thanks for letting everyone know too though :)

This may seem like a bit of a stupid one but is there any cables I should be buying with the build, as I was just looking at a Samsung ssd that came with no cables?
