Looking for a good diesel car, will do doing about 30k miles per year commuting to work

I was thinking about the following

    A4 2.0
    Avensis 2.0

I want something reliable and also cost effective to service / fuel and so on

I know I could look at a 1.6 Octivia or something else

what other options would I have?

Newer model A6 would be a nice cruiser and within budget if you went used. Could probably get a fresh one for the upper end of it. Unless you want something smaller get as big and comfy as you can for a commute. They're smooth on smaller wheels and have a decent spec.

If you want new you might get a deal on the last of the Mondeos.

1.6 diesels aren't worth a feck for overtaking and stuff.

I was looking at the A4 initially but they're expensive for such a common car.

I had also looked at Honda Accords, and would still consider one. Their engines are supposed to be bullet-proof (much more reliable than an A4 or 3-series).

I'm now looking at the Sport model of the Passat and, the more expensive, Passat CC.

Here's an example of what I would consider a nice Passat (although, obviously, it may not be to your taste):

Yeah, that's obviously above average mileage (although not worryingly high for a fully serviced car doing mainly motorway miles). That being said, your budget is higher and I was just pointing out the style of car - your budget would stretch to a low miled version.

I was ringing about that one yesterday anyway and it was sold.

A Luna spec Avensis is a very nice place to be. Only downside would be that it is down on power in comparison to most of its rivals with the exception of the smaller engined diesels.

Volvo S60 D3 or D5, with motor tax now based on emissions there is no reason to look at entry level small capacity engines.

Mazda 6 is picking up good reviews.
