Any of you have a issue with cattle getting a swelling around the knee joint on the rear leg. Had two a few weeks ago, used betamox LA and anti inflamtory to no avail. Got Vet and he told me what it was but I forget, hr gave a Strong LA antibiotic but said swelling may persist. He seemed to have a few cases of it,

Bought in a few cattle last week and one has it again I think. Will check with vet tomorrow but anybody else. These are all Friesian Bullocks about 15-16 months old 350kgs+

Same here for aa off friesan.

Pared foot and no abscess. Ended up with Nsaid cause steroids can bring on abscess. Three shots over six days each. They still not right but lot better.

This is not a hoof infection, I pared the hoof before I called vet. This is an infection at the knee joint. The two that were injected are improving putting weight on foot but still limping. The new one is not putting weight on foot and knee joint is swelled. Did not have it in mart but amazing he picked it up so fast on arrival.

Beg/borrow/steal a footbath and run everything through it the next few times you have them in for dosing/testing/tagging.

And run anything that needs treatment through it morning and evening.

I made treatment of lame cattle a priority a few years ago, as it was just a joke how many were hobbling around here.
It took about 3 years to get on top of it and it was the footbaths that did it.

    Is the joint swollen?

Don't spare the antibiotics anyway, the hock is a complex joint (I think there's 4 large bones moving within it) so when an infection sets into it, it can be very hard to put right.

I've seen a lot of hock problems in dairy bred cattle over the years but its usually while housed.
Unusual that you'd have 3 in the space of a few weeks, while on grass, but I'd say its a coincidence rather than an epidemic.

Meant to say also that phosphor worked well for the lame lads.
It wasn't lameness in the feet, more severe tenderness on all 4. Anyway, reckon some of it due to a phosphor deficiency

Went to vet it was Nuflor under the skin he was giving 2cc/15kgs. So got him done this evening. Lucky I had them in the small paddock with the outside crush. Was giving them a dust of ration to quiten them so put trough in crush and they ran in. Wish it was always so easy.;) Did the rest with ivermectin and copper.

always thought nuflor was for pneumonia... just read there its for respiratory problems and also footrot, also says injection should only be given in the neck!

I inject all my cattle with copper every few months. Vet reckons you can never give them too much

Cant think of the name of it off the top of me head but its not Bluestone.

I remember considering Bluestone and for some reason I avoided it.

I dont know if I was warned or whether it wasn't going to give what I was looking for but steered clear of it.

I'll check it tomorrow evening for ya.

Yeah, me too. Powerful stuff for pneumonia. But I suppose pneumonia is a viral infection just like footrot so it makes sense.

Yes try to give at least twice a year.

I said I would update it. After Nuflor he picked up, swelling around knee was bigger than other bullocks. It burst at back of knee last Friday this seemed to drain the swelling. Put him up crush on Saturday, treated him with Betamox LA as woubd quite open. Used Allymysin spray on wound at back of knee as it was very open and put on stockholm tar( sprayable type) on wound to keep away flies.

He is much more lively and I think will improve better than other two on who the swelling has not receeded.
