This was a proper race, with bunches of riders....they had escorts with flashing lights and warning signs, all very correct, except for one thing. The Escort car was in front of the bikes whereas the danger was surely from vehicles approaching them from behind....anyone know why they would do this

Warning to motorists approaching from the opposite direction that there's a large group of cyclists approaching. But you're right, there should be a car at the back too.

On a dual carriageway? I know they were fast but not quick enough to catch anything more than tractor surely.:-)

You didn't mention that in your first post. Context is king!

sure you'd see the race ages back on a dual carriageway, also odds are one of the lanes was free....especially at the back of the group.

so what purpose does the escort vehicle serve at all then?

To force motorists off the road when they get to a single carriageway :)

I assume that this was a private vehicle rather than a Garda and thus was totally unenforceable

At certain times races may have neutralised sections, typically at the very beginning of a race to get to the "real" start. The riders have to remain behind the car till the neutralised section is over.

A lead car is to warn oncoming vehicles of a potential hazard approaching...i.e. the cyclists. There should also be a "broom Wagon" or last car. This car is always the last vehicle in the "convoy" and is there to warn traffic travelling behind the riders or a potential hazard.

Is it just me or are some of these cycle races bordering on dangerous with the way traffic is managed. I met one in Roscommon (which seemed like an amateur affair ) last week with huge tail backs and cars intermixed with groups of cyclists and from looking in the mirror some dodgy over taking manevours..I guess the motorists had no choice. What is the purpose of the motorbike riders durning these events the way some of them drive it would appear that they think the rules of the road do not apply to them.

Completely irrelevant but I remember the Milk Ras passed by our school in the 90s and some smart person stopped some cars on a corner outside our school...which resulted in a pile up, it was great entertainment for the 40 children watching :)

    You'd be guessing incorrectly then.
