CVs and Data Protection

    Hello all,

Does a recruitment agency need explicit permission to save your CV details on to their database?

I get a lot of emails from agencies asking me to consider jobs. Some I've dealt with in the past, whilst some have found my CV online or somehow had it passed to them and added it to their database. Sometimes they are incredibly vague and one even admitted scraping my LinkedIn profile when they asked me to send a Word version as they were struggling to copy and paste correctly.

I have never ever actually given formal permission to any agency to save my details, I have however sent a lot of emails asking them to delete my details - but every single agency I have asked has ignored me (more emails follow) or told me they are allowed to keep my CV on file because I sent it to them a long time ago.

I'm pretty sure I can tell an agency to delete my CV if I have no active dealings with them and I am tempted to go to the Data Protection Commissioner, but would it be worth the bother?

You can certainly ask them to delete you CV and tell you that they have done so within 40 days.
