Emerging Ireland - Romania 2014 thread

This is probably worth a thread of its own?

Even with a very inexperienced squad, Ireland will be favourites to take the crown here against opponents ranked 17th, 19th and 20th in the world rankings.

Three games in nine days means all 26 players should (hopefully) get a start; the biggest test will presumably be against the hosts in the final game so perhaps we'll see the strongest XV named for that one, otherwise selection is anyone's guess.

The squad is the usual mix of older guys who are on the fringes and younger players looking for a bit of experience and exposure to the international set-up. There are seriously talented players in the backline but perhaps the worry is that going up against teams who are traditionally very big men in Russia and Romania, the forwards may struggle to get enough ball to them.

    Squad:
    Forwards:
Annett, Tracy, Byrne, Bent, Black, Lutton, J Ryan, Holland, Foley, M Kearney, O'Donnell, Dougall, Butler, D Ryan (capt), Copeland

    Backs:
P Marshall, McGrath, Hanrahan, Keatley, Griffin, McCloskey, Macken, Allen, Conway, Murphy, Gilroy

    Fixtures:
13th June; Emerging Ireland v Russia
18th June; Emerging Ireland v Uruguay
22nd June; Emerging Ireland v Romania

    TV?
Games last year were streamed live on the IRB website but no indication yet that the same will happen this year, no reference to it on http://www.irb.com/live/video.html anyway, so we'll have and see how that transpires.

If Keatley and Hanrahan are going, who's going to Argentina?

Sexton and Madigan. Reid can cover 10 in an emergency too.

Coaches are Neil Doaks (Ulster backs) and Dan MacFarland (Connacht forwards) right? There's nobody above them?

McFarland is the head coach for the tour.

  • 3 games in 9 days. Only 26 players travelling.

I imagine there's a few guys on standby!

    (AIL players maybe?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

Out of 160 plus pro players less 25 ish NIQ and adding in the academies I would like to think we have enough professional players to send down. Not having more players travel is probably a money issue.

I would imagine if you weren't picked you'd be on your holliers by now?

The squad has been fairly affected by injury and call ups elsewhere and some other stuff, wouldn't be putting too much expectation on them here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,013 ✭✭✭MattD

I'd still find it funny that all but 1 of the backs will be in the squad for every match for example. It's weird that the two match series vs Argentina has significantly more players to choose from.

    Decent team?

Interesting that McCloskey starts at 12 ahead of Keatley/JJ? I know they were brought as 10s, but would have more experience than McCloskey.

Depends on how you want to play the game. McCloskey is a very different 12 to Keatley and JJ. McCloskey can run hard at the Russians in what will surely be a physical contest for 50-60 minutes and then when the game opens up and the Russians start tiring we can bring a 2nd 5/8th in to put width on the ball for Gilroy and Conway to exploit.

I've used something like this before to record straight off your computer screen. I think it was the Tommie Bowe docu that I uploaded to youtube, which was promptly taken down by RTE. Thing is, you usually have to sit through the whole thing as it simply captures what is on your screen. I'll give it a go if I'm at home for this match.

edit: Removed that link, it has malware :pac:

Crikey it's nearly a month, at best for some, since alot of those guys last played or were involved in a game.

The Rabo playoffs were 4 weeks ago on Fri/Sat.

That's very true. There could be a lot of rustiness among some of these guys who haven't played a game in over a month. Out of interest I looked into when each of the squad played their last game:

15- Johne Murphy – Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)
    14- Craig Gilroy - Rabo Semi-Final (May 17th)
13- Eoin Griffin - Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)
12- Stuart McCloskey - Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)
    11- Andrew Conway - Rabo Semi-Final (May 16th)
    10 - Ian Keatley - Rabo Semi-Final (May 16th)
9- Paul Marshall – Ulster vs. Leinster (May 2nd)
    1- Callum Black - Rabo Semi-Final (May 17th)
2- Niall Annett – Ulster vs. Glasgow (April 18th)
3- Michael Bent –Leinster vs Treviso (April 18th)
4- Mick Kearney – Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)
    5- David Foley - Rabo Semi-Final (May 16th)
6- Dominic Ryan - British & Irish Cup Final (May 23rd)
    7- Tommy O'Donnell - Rabo Semi-Final (May 16th)
8- Robin Copeland - Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)

    Replacements:
16-James Tracy - British & Irish Cup Final (May 23rd)
17-John Ryan – Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)
18- Billy Holland – Last Rabo Regular Season Match (May 10th)
    19- Sean Dougall - Rabo Semi-Final (May 16th)
20- Luke McGrath - British & Irish Cup Final (May 23rd)
    21-JJ Hanrahan - Rabo Semi-Final (May 16th)
22- Brendan Macken - British & Irish Cup Final (May 23rd)

Obviously some of these may be incorrect, so apologies if they are. Also, some of the players listed did feature on the bench in later games but weren't used, so I just put the last game in which they featured.

Some of them were involved in the Rabo playoffs with Ulster & Munster, while a couple played in the B&I Cup Final. Somewhat worryingly, our starting tighthead prop & hooker haven't been involved in a game since April 18th as far as I can tell.

The match kicks off in a few hours and there is still nothing on the IRB website; they are streaming the JWC and the Tblisi Cup so I'd say we'll lose out.

(I forgot the game was today rather than Saturday so it makes no odds as I'll be in work).
