Not looking for medical advice just easiest way to get X-ray. After a few days a foot sprain may need to be checked, do I have to get a gp referral for a hospital or can I go straight to a clinic? I'm near a swiftcare, is this like cutting out the middle step and can you just go and get an appointment, X-ray and treatment?

Swiftcare will cost you more end to end than going to a GP for a referral.

Thanks but where do they refer you to? The a&e of Big hospital or the X-ray section during office hours? My only past experience years ago is a gp sending me to a&e to sit there for 5 hours, swiftcare looks like I could go in evening and pay maybe 300?

Generally there's a scan centre on-site. Your GP can also refer you to a private scan centre though. There are multiple in Dublin alone

Swiftcare costs €125 + 95 for the xray, 220. Benefit is the doctor and scan in the one place and quick results. It would also be much quicker than private emergency departments (e.g hermitage, cost 232 for same) as swiftcare only treat minor cases and have a guaranteed wait time of an hour or less I believe. However if you need fracture clinic or surgery, you'll be referred elsewhere.

With a GP's letter there are many scan centres and private hospital radiology departments you can walk into, no waiting around and it'd be cheaper.

GP (costs 40-65 depending probably) followed by free X ray at local hosp if needed (if possible fracture same day, rapid service with access to fracture clinic if needed)

Some cities/areas will have hospital run Minor Injuries/Urgent Care clinics where you'd see a doctor/get Xrays.

Ones that come to mind include the Mater Rapid Injyury Clinic in Smithfield, the Mercy Urgent Care centre in Cork and the Minor Injuries Unit Cottage Hospital in Dundalk. St Michael's in Dun Laoghaire isn't too busy either. Might be another option to avoid ED, works same way in that you'd get a referral if appropriate from your GP and there would be no additional cost.

Similar issue, might have broken a bone in my foot and need to get it x-rayed. Can I just go into St Michael's in DL and get it X-rayed, if so, what's the cost? Tks

Yes, if it warrants an X-ray. You'll need to be assessed. It's free if you have a GP referral or €100 if not.
