Hi all, I've recently become the proud owner of a mk1 Golf Gti which is in need of restoration trouble is the guy I got it off brought it over from England years ago and it was never registered here and I have no log book.
Now I know it's not stolen just wondering how do I go about getting the log book and claiming it in ???
I asked a lady in the vrt office in Galway her answer was I will have to pay all the back tax on it is this correct ?
    Thanks

you can't do anything as regards VRT until it is ready for the road.
You will need to show when you bought it and who from. The seller isn't actually entitled to sell a foreign vehicle in the Republic (assuming he is a Resident) so he may have a problem. I don't think it is actually possible to pay Motor Tax on an unregistered vehicle, but there is a penalty for not paying VRT within 30 days of import.

You need to contact the UK dvla about getting it put in your name and getting a logbook for it

    What year is it?

Give the registration number and the chassis number to the DVLA in Swansea, they will send you an export cert with the current date on it and use that to register it here, no back tax to pay.

I'm not sure you can re-reg with an export cert any more and they wont send him one as he isn't the registered owner

    Thanks for the speedy replies.
    It's an A reg (1983)
The person didn't sell it to me he has a few "project" cars but with the arrival of his children and increase in his work load he gave it to me as he'd rather see something done with it than rot away.

Here's the form, the DVLA will contact the previous owner.

I registered a car on the export cert about a year ago, I haven't heard about the changes.

score...it's 30 years+...VRT only €200...any penalty based on that will be peanuts. Be inventive with a purchase receipt when you come to VRT it ;-)
