Get a full check done as they are early models with plenty of electrical gremlins, timing chain needs to be replaced as well, common sense would say have a budget available for issues.

Check for bubbly wheel arches too.

You really have to get automatic there.

    Definitely get an auto!

A manual just isn't suited to that kind of car.

Merc were out of their 'electrical and rust disaster' phase by 2005, but check for rust(check everywhere, especially underneath) and make sure all the electrics work.

From what ive read on these,06 on is when all the issues were sorted.

Yeah 05-06 is right around when they started building their cars properly again.

I've seen a few 00-03 ish E classes that look fine though in fairness.

No worries about rust on the W211 model I don't think. The W210 on the other hand was an utter bucket.

Friend has one and the arches are going for the last 18 months.

Thanks for the advice, am thinking twice about them now!!

Have a 00 C180 that has given me no trouble over the 7 years that I have it, and it is starting to show a few indications of rust, am not getting rid of it and was hoping to pick up something similar.

Not sure the budget would get me as far as on 05/06 though!!
