    Hi all,

Does anybody have any idea what the average salary for a solicitor is at 2/3 years PQE in Dublin?

What kind of firm? Commercial or other? Large or small?

If you Google "Brightwater Salary Survey 2014" it has a section on law and sets out a range for various years of PQE.

I would link to it but their POS website is defaulting to a cut-down mobile version for some reason.

    Thanks for replies.

I've been told the salary surveys are unrealistic and "no one ever goes by them". Not sure how true that is!

I'd be interested to know for in-house in Dublin (not finance). I find that generally more senior solicitors are employed in house so it's difficult to know what's about right.

    Thanks

Id say 35-40k. Could be higher, finance would probably be higher.

Don't know about law, but for IT the brightwater Survay is very well regarded and pretty accurate....

35 to 40 is very low

    50 minimum, surely.

In a small-medium law firm I'd say yes, but in-house, i'm not so sure. Could be wrong. Any in-house lawyers here?

Do in house solicitors get paid less?

I'm in-house, it depends on the company and the role (as with all) - I think NQ around 35k, 3 year PQE probably anywhere from 40-50, 5 year PQE around 60-70. In-house roles do really start paying well with 5+ years experience! and the work/life is usually good.

Yeah they were the figures I had in mind. In house, the more experience you have, do the roles become more scarce?

I know in private practice there is always a number of lawyers progressing up through the levels, but is there a bottleneck in-house?

Yeah, I think there are limited roles and lots of competition not only from other in-house lawyers, but also those in private practice who are looking for the slightly less stressful billables game in-house. I definitely don't regret going in-house (as a barrister a few years ago I was struggling to keep my head above water and now things at the bar seem even worse) but you need to play the game and keep making moves at the start to progress quickly.
