If you're not planning on buying it in the next month, there's not really much point in speccing anything out for you. Components and prices change too quickly.

Some general things I can tell you though:

First off, I'd advise more money than that. You can build a gaming rig for €400 alright, but it's really not the best value, and you won't be too impressed, I don't think, coming from an XBox. Watch Dogs in particular will probably kill it.

Research! Wander onto forums (like this one) and have a read of other people's threads, and see what they get recommended. Read reviews of those components, and any other stuff the reviews might mention in comparison. It's the fastest way to pick up knowledge of where things are at.

For something that cheap, you'll want to sacrifice everything you can, and put all the saved money into the graphics card. It's the thing that'll make the biggest difference to your games, by far.

You'll want to look into socket 1150 Celeron or Pentium. You'll see a lot of people online balk at these processors, but that's largely due to a lack of knowledge on their part, or simply a stigma from way back when. Pair one of those processors with a cheap H81 board, and you've spent about €100 from your budget.

Power: Don't let people tell you you'll need 600W or something stupid. For your purposes, ignore anything larger than around 450W, unless it's only marginally more expensive or something. A good, name brand 450W unit will be better than any 800W Xtreme G4M3R Ultra PSU. The rule of thumb is that you should be spending in and around 1/10th the PSU's wattage (so €45 for a 450W). If it's cheaper than this, there's a reason, and you should probably stay well away.

Memory: 8GB is what you should get. Whatever's cheap. It really doesn't matter much at all any more.

Case: It can be a bit hard to find really cheap, good cases. The Core 1000 from Fractal Design is a nice one, as well as the BitFenix Merc Alpha (or Beta). Note that these only support mATX motherboards, but they're generally a bit cheaper than their ATX counterparts, so you should probably look at one of those anyway.

GPU: The all important one. Off the bat, there's new stuff coming anywhere from September to about November, so if that's the kind of time-frame you're looking at, maybe wait for those to show up. If not, again, research. TechPowerUp is a great site for broadly comparing lots of different video card to give you a general idea of where they sit performance-wise, as well as how much they cost.

Storage: A bog standard 500GB drive is probably all you'll fit in this. An SSD would be a lovely addition (and probably the first thing I'd add, if you had any extra money to throw at it) but 120/240GB is just too small for a games library, unless you really only play a very select few.

    Hope that helps.

Should I go up to €800 or buy a steam box?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭LukeyKid

I wouldn't go for a steam box, But yeah 800 is pretty reasonable for a nice gaming pc depending on weather you need a new monitor and OS as well ? there goes 200+ out of your budget depending on how picky you are about your monitor :P.

No need to spend 10% of the budget on windows 8. Seems to be every single one of my posts here recently; but go with reddit software swap! :D. A windows 8 key can be had for $10. Also no real need for dvd drives anymore. Shave another 10-15 quid off every build that way too. That's the bones of an extra 90 euro for the build with those little changes. 4gb ram isn't enough any more though. I've got 4.5gb ram used up as I'm writing this and I've only got a few programs open.

OP 800 is a great budget if you don't need peripherals, and grand enough if you do. There have been a good few builds suggested on the forum recently in and around that price mark if you want to have a look. Not really worth bothering to plan it now if you're not buying yet.

but with "frozenfrozen" way you still save enough to through in more ram, or a SSD :)

no still wouldn't run the likes of watch dogs, you'd need to be spending 150-200 on a Gpu if you were to run it comfortable. You wouldn't be able to max id say but you'd be able to run most games comfortably.

something like this would run it comfortably at medium - high settings.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-xfx-radeon-hd-7870le-dd-edition-gddr-5-28nm-4800mhz-gddr5-gpu-1000mhz-1280-cores-2x-dvi-hdmi-2x-

This would probable max it or give it a good shot.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-asus-radeon-r9-280x-directcu-ii-top-6400mhz-gddr5-gpu-1070mhz-2048-cores-dvi-d-hdmi-dport

But it is mainly down to your Gpu but you need a good Cpu aswell better then an i3 any way if your going to be play the newest games out. Also change the single 8gb stick of ram to 2 - 4gb sticks of ram.

CPU isn't really important. Playing watch dogs with an i3 vs an i7 there would be a difference of 5 fps max.

Id say a little more :L but the requirements to play watchdogs on ultra settings is a i7 4770 and a GTX 780

So i was just saying your better off going with an i5, and a R9 280x id you want to get high setting

or go for a i5 and a 7870 to get medium and save the bank alittle.
