    Hi All,
been driving an e39 for years and absolutely love it but the tax is killing me and the body is not what it once was. It needs a respray truth be told with all the stone chips etc but the price of a respray would be more than the value of the car. FANTASTIC car all the same, but its time for an up grade. Im looking for advice on either an e60 520d or either changing model and opting for an Audi A6 2 liter(ish) diesel
Any advice would be welcomed and im looking at manual transmission around 2006-2008

    cheers

I suggest you go test drive both, coming from an E39 you may find the drive and feel of the A6 bland to the point of numb in comparison. The A6 does have a larger interior than the E60 though. One thing though, if going for an E60 520d then avoid Sept 2007 onwards 177bhp versions. That engine is well known for having timing chain problems.

what size engine is the E39, if its the 2.2L, I see no point in changing to a 2L CC based car, you Going from a straight 6 petrol to a 4 pot diesel with far more to go wrong. You go for an emission one and as has been said, they suffer from the timing chain issue and there is a massive premium for the "low tax" that would take years to recoup... E241 is the saving on CC between a 2L and 2.2L You will lose a lot more than you save on depreciation alone, loan interest if applicable. I note a lot of people who have driven or owned both preferred the E39...

530d manual... hence the crippling tax

with a 3L it makes sense, the 2.5 I would still probably say keep it v a 2L, as it would be 370 in difference. But the 3L tax is just sick...

i was contemplating a 630 for a while, made my mid up a while ago I simply was not prepared to pay the tax on the 3L. I currently have a 2.5, which is E1080, I find this amount just about stomachable, by far the best 6 pot option based on the tax here...

I've had two A6's C6 model and now the C7 can safely say both of them are the most comfortable drive I've experienced with the C7 being a little more dynamic. On the C6 version I had a 2.0tfsi and now have the c7 in a 2.0tdi both very comfortable and reliable.
