Anyone any idea of rte coverage over the few days ? I'm away ( holiday or the golf ??? Holiday won ) no sky but have rte

What day and what way is the best way of enjoying this do you think?
Seen the ladies a couple of times which was always pretty quiet and tickets were free (and the added interest of looking at some very tidy bums :D), but this is going to be my first time at a European Tour men's event.

I have 2 one day tickets (me and missus) as I really just want to see those guys up close for once, but want to see the outcome of the tournament on telly really, cos its so much better I think. Which rules out Sunday.

I think it also rules out following any marquee groups, I have no intention of stomping after McIlroy or Harrington with a few thousand other guys in tow.

Would you just go with some half decent group that only has a dozen following or so? Is there any chance for that even? Or would place yourself strategically where you can cover a few tees & greens with some short walks?

And would you rather go Thursday/Friday (day off required of course) or Saturday instead? Would you say difference is going to be huge between workday or Saturday in terms of crowds?

    Cheers

Edit: Looking at the confirmed list right now. This s going to be cool. Two players/swings I'd love to see would be Raphael Jaquelin and Richard Green. Of course they might be gone come Saturday.

I spent three days at last year's events and really it was a lot of time. You can do all or none of what you suggested. It's frustrating sometimes following the marquee groups as you are constantly jostling for a viewing space and tripping over people but there is the extra buzz and atmosphere that comes with it. You could maybe follow them for an hour or so then move to something less stressful.

I found it best to bring a small stool and park beside a par 3 green or a driveable par 4 and enjoy for a few hours. You see a more variety of shots with less effort. Alternatively follow a smaller group like the lads u mentioned above and it will be a lot more pleasant especially if they are playing well.

I was lucky enough last year to be standing at the 7th green when damian mooney got his hole in one. Cue 20 of us cheering with our hands in the air and about 2000 others on the 5th watching mc dowell and looking over wondering what the hell was going on.

Make sure to follow Raphael around.... dreamy :)

Followed him around Carton last year for a fair few holes and it was class.

I'm hoping the rain stays away this year - when it rains the amount of eejits with umbrellas blocking your view would drive you spare.

The forecast looks promising so fingers crossed

You can see the schedule on the RTE web site - Sky have their usual coverage, but there is plenty of coverage of all four days on RTE too.

Any link yet to grouping and tee times?

I have stand tickets for the Sunday. Would it be better to get a greenside spot early though?

I'd only do that if I didn't have stand tickets - you should have a great view from the stand

Had look at a few boxes yesterday from the tiger forest across the road. They need to be sure to cook the burgers thoroughly, if he smells raw meat all hell could break loose.

Place looks immaculate. Can't wait for Wednesday.

Odd that there is no public entry tomorrow ,practice rounds are usually the best way to get up close to the players .

Not much of a saving buying the tickets online. Only save two Euro on the gate price. Weather is looking great for the week.

That's disappointing, didn't hear about withdrawals

Would like to have seen Molinari & Luiten

Another one that would have drawn some crowds just withdrew - John Daly, think they were planning a whacky trousers day on either Thursday or Friday around him

Well if too many withdraw and they are short I'll not see them stuck :-)

It'd be lovey to be able to bounce my ball off the spectators instead of it going oob. No pro would ever do that would they :-)

taught you save €5 when you book on line if you ring tickets are only €30 and they post out to you.

The hotels are nearly all gone at this stage. I only looked lastnight and got one in carrigaline but was lucky more than anything. The travel lodge was ~€150 per night I thought that was a bit high

I got the 5 day ticket for €70 I think on line which is a good saving on the daily price.

    Lads,

I'd like to combine attending the Irish Open Thursday and Friday with playing a couple of early rounds each morning. Cork Golf Club http://www.corkgolfclub.ie comes highly recommended by a friend and obviously there is The Old Head but that's too expensive. Where else within a 20 minute drive of Cork city centre, other than Cork Golf Club would people recommend? We'd be prepared to pay a bit extra for a well maintained quality course and facilities etc.

    Ben

Cobh Golf Club are running an Open Singles each day and has the advantage of being a 5 minute drive to Fota

That is true. Is Cobh a better course than Mallow which seems to get good reviews albeit it is a bit of a drive?

What do you think traffic will be like on Saturday morning at 7am?

I'd play in that open early if I thought I could make it thorough the traffic, there wouldn't be much point in booking it if you had the possibility of two hours plus of traffic.

I haven't played Mallow in 10 years so I can't really compare the two. Cobh is a fine course and the dry sunny weather usually brings out the best of it. The greens are always a good challenge with their humps and hollows and it is safe to say that the pros will have an easier time of it on the relatively flatter surfaces of Fota :)
I haven't played Cobh this year but Reganovski is a member there and could tell you what condition it is in.

I'd say Saturday and Sunday won't get overly busy until later in the day as we get closer to the time that the leaders tee off. Thursday and Friday might be a different story though.

Just looking at the traffic info and there seems to be a slight detour from Cork City to Cobh in order to bypass Fota so that should also help.

I'd prefer Mallow, but I'm biased, played Cobh last week and it's in very good nick to be fair, worth it to have a go at the island green hole, similar to 17th at Sawgrass.

Muskerry is a lovely track if a small bit hilly, best finishing holes in Cork imho.

Inter, Junior and Minor Scratch Cups on in Mallow Fri-Sunday.

I should also mention that Cobh is a hilly course so it might be tough on the legs in advance of a 6 hour walk around Fota ;)

My picks would be Castlemartyr - same side of city as Fota/Cork GC - and Water Rock. The former is an inland links type place and in very good condition; the latter is a small, pay and play affair and surprisingly good fun. I also have a fondness for Mahon in the city centre. Municipal but some very good golf holes
