I'm going to be doing Arts in NUIG this September, I'm wondering what would the most marketable subjects be in the Degree? French,German, Legal studies, Economics, Psychology, History or Politics? I am interested in all of them but I'm worried about the Job prospects. I don't see myself wanting to do teaching atm or maybe never! Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance :)

There is plenty of jobs no matter what subjects you choose just have to work hard enough....
Will really depend on your interests as you have a wide range of subjects listed there. Ive just finished 1st year and did History and Politics if you want any info on them..
Any ideas on what you want to work in after 3rd level?? That will help with people giving advice on careers....

Not true. I know a lot (ie more than half) of people in their early who studied arts and are now unemployed or in unstable employment.

What you study matters to employers. STEM graduates that i know are nearly all in employment but not in Ireland.

Are you planning on doing a masters afterwards? IT even struggles to get a job afterwards because they have to compete against people with a degree in IT. Any of the subject you listed are competing against graduates who werent split between 2 subjects or I have no idea what kind of job would would get out of it.

Going by my experience its true. Most I know who did arts are working(most graduated 2/3 years at this stage) and fairly secure.
Subject choices matter yes but there is plenty of jobs regardless of the subject and what matters more is your results and what degree you get than the subjects in majority of cases from my experience

Thanks for the replies, I intend to do a Masters after my degree. After it something in Business/Law or Politics is what I'd like to pursuer a career in.

I'd say go for a language. You may even get the chance to go on an Erasmus semester or year out, which is a brilliant experience. It will also broaden your job prospects upon graduation! Out of the other subjects, I'd go for economics or legal studies if you're hoping to pursue business or law after it.

I know one of the above posters says it doesn't really matter what subjects you pick because you can always specialise in your masters.. but if you're going to go into business and law then getting a grounding in it in your undergrad will be much more helpful!

Do any of ye have the paper copy of the prospectus? I was thinking about doing Arts with Children's Studies, but I know I want to do English and Psychology as well. Thing is I don't know if either of them are in the Children's Studies block because they don't say on the online prospectus but I know it's in the paper one. Could ye tell me what subjects are in the same block as Children's Studies if ye have it handy? :)

Hard to say what will suit you. What other subjects are you thinking of doing or would like to try?
What about Maths as another option

This is last year's prospectus so you shouldn't take it as gospel, but it may be useful as a guideline. The groupings are on PDF page 26:

For what it's worth, a friend of mine took Children's Studies with Psychology last year.

Do you think the points will stay around 300 like the last two years?
