Disc Brakes Squeaking?

My front disc brake has started to make an awful squealing noise when I apply the brakes. I must bring it into my LSB to get checked, but just wondering if anyone else has any experience with this? I think I slightly chipped the edge of the brake pad when I was slotting the wheel back in, would that cause it?

You get grease or oil or any type of overspray on the discs or pads recently when cleaning or maintaining? Give the pads a light rub on some fine sandpaper and get some brake disc cleaner on the discs to check for contamination before you look at anything serious.

Not unusual if you ask me. Normally happens to me with sintered pads. I changed to different type of pads last winter because I was fed up with the squealing. Braking's not as good, but doesn't matter as it's only on country/city roads.

Contamination on the pads was my recent experience.... very annoying to listen to.

I think nearly everybody using disc brakes will have had issues with squeeeking at one time. As mentioned above either the pads have been contaminated, but it may just as well be a question of adjusting the brake correctly so that the pads are parallel to the disc. Badly adjusted calipers can produce a lot of noize

Yeah was thinking they may be contaminated. I try to keep any of the cleaning stuff away from them but the lube I use is the spray type so something could've got on them. I'll try to get some disc cleaner and give them a rub down before I do anything else.

If that fails, a trip to LBS would probably do the trick?

This is a problem that can often be solved with fire.

If you have a gas hob, take off the rotor, a rinse in some soapy water as a start and then place it on the hob and give it some gas, this will burn off greases and residues which may not otherwise be removed.

This has worked for me at times when braking has become noisy or spongy.

You may also want to replace your pads or sand them depending on muck or wear.

(I doubt the chipped pad would be the cause).
