I bought a couple of old cows with calves at foot with the intention of weaning them early and finishing the cows.

One is a mid-march calver and the other early April.

How early would you wean in that situation?

One thing I would watch out for if weaning early this time of the year would be summer mastitis in the cows . I wouldnt do it if they were milky kinda cows myself . I would be happier getting better condition on the calves with the free milk and start fattening the cows a few months later .

Meal away the cows with the calves on them and you would be surprised how well they both come on. I have weaned suckler bred calves and done as you were suggesting and ive always being disappointed in the weanlings at the end of the year.

That sounds like a good idea. And put the cow straight into the factory the day you wean?

No was going to feed on a bit and finish off grass. Nothing put weight on faster than a dry cow.

Was thinking of weaning in September and that would leave roughly 6 weeks to finish

Doing a bit of suckling with a few culls and I am leaning to feeding on and sell them all the one day in october, cows to factory, calves to the mart, maybe start feeding in august
