VRT OMSP Change

I purchased a Seat Leon FR up the North less than a month ago. I had a VRT appointment today, at which the MRSP was quoted 1.2k dearer than the quote given on the revenue website for the same model.

I have screenshots of the previous quotation, although I'm finding it hard to find any cars in the south with similar specs (FR 2008 TDI) to compare it with - I can't afford to pay the VRT at the increased rate, is it probable that they will offer a VRT refund based on the fluctuation of the MRSP?

    cheers

    Kev

Any ideas lads? Stuck for time with them extorting 0.01 percent of the cars value every day that goes by, such a sham of a government setup

I had a similar problem vrting a 3 year old Focus a few years ago. They wanted €2100.

As per the revenue policy, you must pay the full fee to get it registered but you can appeal it after. For my appeal I printed a few main dealer advert prices (the cheapest I could find) and sent a letter to revenue to appeal. Heard nothing for 5 weeks and initiated a 2nd stage appeal. Got a €600 cheque refund. :)

The issue is is that I cannot find any similar vehicles in the republic because it seems to be a rare car up here so I've nothing but the previous quotation to compare it to :/

    any ideas?

Interesting, never knew you could do that.

Surely though you could just make up or forge these main dealer advert prices.

The Revenue OMSP is completely inaccurate in their favour, no consideration is taken for the condition of car or if it was a Cat D or C car.

How do you initiate this Revenue Appeal?

And you'd present these to the Revenue, probably the only Government agency that's consistently good at what they do; one with the ability to audit your entire life if they find anything amiss?

The same thing happened to me importing a VW Passat.
The vrt increased from €1995 to €4100 in a day!
I had screenshots as well. It made no difference.
I had to pay th higher amount and appeal. Eventually got some money rebated.
    Absolute joke.

Im interested in buying a Black Edition audi a4, and the revenue are saying that the omsp is over 30000 for a 2012 which is DEFINITELY not the case. Has anyone any news on this stupid system since?

    What news would that be?

The appeal process hasn't changed. As posted you pay the VRT amount and register the car first, if after that you can provide proper evidence of the exact same car being sold here at a lower OMSP then you lodge an appeal. If you are successful then they will issue a refund.

    Thanks for reply!

I was hoping that they might have tidied up the system since previous posts on here. Some parts of the form have the same model in twice but with different vrt quotes which is a bit worrying.

Would you recommend buying in the uk yourself or going through a dealer here who specialises in importing uk cars? I hear they can get tradee discounts or something like that?

Depends on a few things, the car in question, the dealer in question and the money involved. If you can buy the exact same car here for the same or less money from a reputable dealer who gives you a decent warranty then it makes more sense to buy here. You just need to do some maths including exchange rate, cost of travelling, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭DOC2015

Ya, I think I would save at least a grand if not more if I went over myself. Not sure whether to ask the dealer for a price or just find one myself and then ask him to chase up that one if he could?

Does the €1k saving include warranty?

The exchange rate at the minute is a definite killer in terms of buying from the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭DOC2015

Ya exchange rate is poor enough. The dealer I would probably work with would be offering at least a 6 month warranty but I'm not sure what price he'll come in at. I may just ring him and get him to get back to me with a price. I wouldnt mind trading in my old car as well as I would find it difficult to sell with no nct and Im not prepared to spend the couple of hundred to get it up to NCT pass...tyres, handbrake, etc.
