What breed do you have and what type of reactions/comments do you get from people when you take them out in public?

We have a greyhound and a lurcher and we get:

People really eager to talk to us about them, having heard they make great pets.

People asking if we race them.

People crossing the road while scooping up their kids and dogs out of the way as they think they are vicious.

People mistakenly assuming that they need loads of exercise.

Men in white vans wanting to buy them from us:eek:

I have a fabulous male black cocker spaniel…. who is practically perfect in everyway :D

    Comments I have gotten is:

Are you sure he’s a cocker? He is MASSIVE …….. (He is pretty tall for a cocker, probably more of a springer’s size in all honesty)

You need to cut down on his treats….. he’s pretty pudgy…. (he’s barrel chested infact, and perfect weight according to my vet)

Another… ohh look at the cocker… isn’t he lovely…. pity his tail was cut too short (when we got him he was already docked)

Lots of people pull their kids away when they see his dogmatic head collar….. eh it’s a walking aid (to stop pulling) not a muzzle!

Another one…. dogs belong outside not inside the kitchen and certainly not in the living room on the couch, due to all the “dander” (swear to god he actually used that word)…

    A family member said recently…
“what he’s 9, he’ll be dead soon, you’ll have to get another one?” …
My answer was “ahh it will be a long time before I get another dog, as he’s not replaceable”…..
His “response sure he’s only a dog of course he’s replaceable”

    what’s not too love ?????

I have a black and tan cocker, but its pretty obvious at this stage he is a cross between a setter and a cocker.

So we are always asked what is his breed.

    Isn't his colouring amazing

He is a bit mental is he (he is batshít insane in fact)

He loves the water does he?

Someone asked me the same question recently....while I was walking three dripping smiley dogs away from the local lake! Was tempted to say no they hate water....

I have a Germany sheperd and his a big fella. Out walking him last week and 2 women walk out of the house in front of me and stroll past. A few seconds later one of them roars back at me to keep him beside me.

Thing is he was right beside me, head down and paid no attention to them at all like.

He's a big softy in reality haha

    "Aren't they gorgeous"

    "Are they related?"

And men wanting to buy them from me.

They freak my mother out for some reason. She'll yell at me to come get them because they're sniffing her legs! She does prefer them to my brother's dogs though, because my pair have manners and don't get up on the sofa without asking.

I don't have my own dog but I use to walk a friends every day when she was at work. Every day I'd get:

What breed is she? (A cocker spaniel)

She's full of energy alright! (As she lost her sh*t because someone said hello!!)

And, joy of joys, lots of very pretty ladies just saying hello. I'm telling you, that dog was the ULTIMATE wingman. ;)

2 Siberian Huskies... Hugo is 3 and Jack is not yet 6 months. They're walked side by side so, as you can imagine - get a lot of attention.

The oddest thing we get asked?
Are they puppies. Ya, Hugo is a 27kg puppy??? That's an odd one.

The instant question is 'are they related' or 'mother and puppy'? They're identically marked - so I guess people just assume they're related. Which of course they are. Half brothers.

And we get a lot of 'what breed are they'?

Or, are they vicious? Ya, be careful before they lick you to death.

    The only negative...
When 'husky type dogs' (what are they?) are covered in the press as having mauled a child, etc... Lots of crossing the road to avoid us.

LOL Vel, those are the reactions I get with my greyhound too! She's all black so might seem intimidating to the uninitiated, so I put a big pink flowery fleece coat on her. :D

Re: the men in white vans - a friend of mine helpfully suggested I put a coat on Josie with the following embroidered in big letters on the side: "DON'T BOTHER - I'M NEUTERED." :D

    My two setters -

    "Are they related?"

No, one we got as a pup, the other was a rescue, from different sides of the country.

    "But they look so alike!"

No, they're just the same colour and size, He's got a big white patch and paw & nose markings while she's solid red.

"Are you going to breed them?"

    No, they're both "decommissioned"

    "Aren't they so well behaved!"

Not all the time, they are experts at putting on a good show for visitors but given half a chance they can be a pair of brats!

'oh wow....that's the biggest Collie I've ever seen!! What is he?'

'He's a giant Collie, they're bred out Wesht in Connemara to herd cows'

    :D

    (he's a collie/newfoundland cross we're pretty sure)

I have to admit that that always bugs me. People claim mine are identical but other than being small and blackish they're really not. It makes me want to say "Well, there are these things that are called breeds and over many, many years people have developed these breeds so that they all look pretty much the same"

The other day walking our whipet Bertie I got -

Damn you'd want to feed him more you can see his bloody ribs.

    Is he a dwarf greyhound.

And my all time favorite from a very knowledgable sounding lady who informed her son he was obviously a long legged jack russell. When I told her hecwas a whippet she told me I was being rediculous because you can't buy them in that colour.

As for the lads in the white vans who want to buy him/breed from him etc. I tell them he has a heart murmur and would be no good to them.

Have a year old Alaskan Malamute and a 7 yr old King Charles. They're walked together.

Constantly asked is the Mal a husky, fair enough they could be similar looking if you didnt know what you wore looking at. She was alot smalled at the time to so as a pup was understandable.

Had them down the memorial park in dublin there last week and there was a man walking a black husky and the differences are so huge between the two breeds when you see them side by side. One skinny legged, slim and smalled then my bear of a thing that is as dozy as anything running over to say hello and then running away because shes afraid of her own shadow.

King charles dosent get as much attention anymore. When he was a pup thought every second person would comment about him being so small and cute :P

Skinny legged, slim and small? Not my two. :)

See that paw, second from the left. That belongs to a not yet 6 month old Husky!

I get a lot of oh wow is your dog a pitbull? (he is a 40kg american bulldog)
    Does he eat a lot?
And of course, crossing the road while screaming bloody murder because my dog looked at them, that is always entertaining

When I used to walk Rusty, I used to hear what a beautiful girl - er no he's a boy!!

With Tara, I get oh she's so cute before bending straight down to stroke her, whilst I quickly try to stop them before she snaps at them!
Hate people who don't ask if they can touch!
Just cos she's small and cute doesn't mean she's sweet! To strangers anyway!

I have two shetland sheepdogs, my tricolour never gets much more than a "how cute!" or a "little lassie" comment.

But my blue merle? He gets all the attention, I have had people say to me "oh, she (even though he's a boy) must be quite old" their face when I tell them "nope, he's only 2" is priceless. I've been asked has he always looked the way he does because he is so gray. Someone even asked was he my tricolour's mother when in reality they are brothers!

Someone once asked me was he a "special breed" whatever that means.

Besides this, I rarely go a walk without hearing a comment about lassie, "it must take a lot of time to brush them" or "do they shed?" I also get the occasional comments about them being miniatures when they are actually full size.

Here's a picture of my boy, please excuse how damp he looks! Ha: http://imgur.com/MsqWFaj

We have a Shih Tzu. We always get:

    Is it a puppy? No - he's 5. Won't get any bigger...
Isn't she gorgeous! - Uh despite the looks, it's actually a little boy.
Will you breed him? No - he's neutered. In any case, he has no papers.

And the best one? Is it your dog?? OF COURSE HE'S MY BLOODY DOG!! Black people do like dogs, you know!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭Ziegfeldgirl27

I always get "aww look at that wee puppy!" and "what age is your puppy?"
It's so funny telling people she is 13 years old.

The most annoying to me is "what a lovely shih tzu!" and I am met with blank stares when I say she is a lhasa apso.

I get a lot of mixed reactions with my Cato. He's a German Shepherd mix and quite big lad.

I've had people cross the road as soon as they catch sight of him.

People scoop up their little dogs or pull them aside as if he's going to eat them or something.

People ask me how often i have to walk him "Jesus, he's a big lad isn't he? I bet he's the legs walked off you".

LOADS of people ask what breed he is. A lot of people think he's some sort of labrador/doberman/rottweiler mix.

They ask where i got him (he's a rescue).

Am I breeding him (he's neutered).

    They ask about him temperament.

They ask what I feed him.

Can they pet him (always yes!)

Yesterday for example, I brought him for a stroll about town and went for a drink afterwards. He got so many rubs from strangers, he was delighted. I brought him into the pub then which was jammed and he got loads of positive attention which is really nice. I swear he can spot who's a soft touch and will pet him a mile away

This is him this time last year, he's about 1 and half in it.

We usually get more comments 'like lovely dogs' (3 greys, 1 collie and a 1 spaniel x) from tourists than locals. We have appeared in a few holiday snaps too :). Locals are more likely to ask do we race them! One morning we met a lovely American lady who was staying in a B&B nearby. We exchanged pleasantries and had a few words about dogs in general . We met her again the next morning, starting chatting again and she came on the walk with us so we handed over one of the dogs to her to walk. Lovely way to start the day.

She's a dote. Brilliant with everyone and because she's slightly smaller than most Westies is often for a pup!!

    American Akita

All I ever get is "Wow, gorgeous dog..."

My guy is always on a lead and muzzled so people never have any ammo apart from how cool looking he is.

They tend to ask me about him and I sum it up like this: "Amazing dog, very loyal to his owners, doesn't have much time for anyone else...and when guests are over I just send him to his bed as he doesn't like people in the house coming near him and this makes him an excellent guard dog."

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 14,236 Mod ✭✭✭✭pc7

I was probably one of those that asked. I'd never seen or heard of an American Akita and was passing a guy walking one. Like that I asked what is he? Do you have to walk him loads? He's fabulous!! Now I feel like a loon :)

People comment that my lab it too skinny ...

Ehhh no he's just not a tub of lard like most haha, ollie has little tapered waist and is walked a lot!

My 12 year old gets a lot of comments, being an older lurched and such. She has fatty lumps in her stomach around her mammary glands (she was neutered at first heat, never bred and we test the lumps every three months to make sure they don't turn cancerous) which makes her look larger than she actually is.
I always get people asking am I selling the puppies and would they make good lampers or ratters. .. Again usually by the men in the white vans

Walking the huskies I get one of the following, guaranteed every time:

    Where's your sledge?

Are you walking them, or are they walking you?

    Is it a wolf?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭Kali_Kalika

My dog Kali attracts loads of attention. In busy places it can be hard to get from A to B at times due to so many stopping and wanting to pet or or chat or compliment her. :D Its a great complaint! :D

:D A few weeks ago she and I made an adventure to Dublin City to meet a friend, we arrived early so took her for a walk around the Liffey and Temple Bar - we sat on the boardwalk for about 15 minutes just soaking up some sun - and in that sitting time she was bought and handed a 99, had a swarm of little girls around her putting Barbies (or something like a Barbie) under her collar and then putting bows and ribbons around her head and ears (god love her patience!) and overall just shrieking about her cuteness  - after they moved on I started to notice that in that time a group of adults had formed a queue!!! One by one (or couple by couple) they stepped up to chat and pet her - a few were tourists and wanted to take pictures of her! (In Temple Bar, mecca of the tourist, she was more interesting than the old architecture and vast pubs that most tourists are snapping!)

Today even, in our local park - I had her out for a run with her ball flinging device (no idea what its called, a Launcher has just been suggested - but I'm sure y'all know what I mean!) and another swarm of children descended upon us - asking what it was I had (I explained, then showed them) - and within seconds it was whipped off me, they organized turns and then spent the next hour throwing her ball for her - their Mum took them home delighted and happy and the "poor" dog has been under the table in recovery ever since we got home, wasn't even sure she had the energy to make it up the final hill to home!

So - she's incredibly popular :D:D She loves all the attention she gets thankfully and is always really good with older people (she loves jumping up to greet people - but with older people she never will, she'll just sit)

I've been enjoying everyones posts and photos backwards (don't ask, its a bad phone day!) so only got to the start of the thread now. OMG - Gimmick! Our dogs have to be related!! I've only ever seen one dog (from the same rescue Kali came from) who has been similar - but yours is gorgeous!

Have a westie who when her coat is long kids think she is a teddy bear and make a beeline for her. Also get is she a puppy and people look at me like I'm lying when I say she's 10. Also my hubby thinks she the ultimate babe magnet if we ever go for a spin to Howth the amount of female tourists who take an interest in her and have taken her picture has me worried I could have an 'accident' off the pier one day!

We have a golden retriever and he's the best I the world. Such a lovely placid boy and amazing with our little girl.

We get the usual, "oh he's gorgeous", "do you let him near the baby, probably not a good idea...", "he's in great shame for his age..."

He was our first baby and remains a priority member of our family. I was shocked at how many people asked were we getting rid of him when I was pregnant??? What the hell is that about? I just dont understand thst. We would be absolutely devastated if anything happened to him.

I brought him into the pub then which was jammed and he got loads of positive attention which is really nice. I swear he can spot who's a soft touch and will pet him a mile away

This is him this time last year, he's about 1 and half in it.

This is more recent, me and him messing.

By any chance was it Galway you were walking? Seen a lovely dog just like Cato, reason I remember was because he was so well behaved I thought of trying to walk my fella in a crowded street :P

What I mostly get asked is 'what is it?' :P he's a cairn terrier cross but when his hair is long he resembles a hedgehog, or a ball of wirey hair with two eyes stuck on the front :P
Got asked once how much I paid for him and where I got him from, followed by would you sell him. He told me he'd be a great dog for letting off after foxes. I kindly told him eh no thanks not for sale.

Ive a rescue jack russell hes terrified of other dogs( vet reckons going by some scars he has he was used for baiting) so he wears a muzzle when hes out for walks so people generally avoid him even tho he adores people espeically kids . That and he attracts the boyos in white vans untill they find out hes neutered
