Nobody here can answer that question, you'll just have to ring around for quotes. I'm with axa myself and am happy with their prices and service.

Tax doesn't reduce until the car is 30 years old, nct is yearly unless the car is pre 1980 then it's exempt.

You'll struggle to get cover on an 1998 I'd say. I tried for my 2000 and no joy

You'd need a main car on the road and insured before they'd entertain you and be over 25

most insurance companies that offer classic policys stipulate that the car is to be 20 years old or older, you also must have another vehicle full time on the road and be over 25, campion use to cover cars 15 years old and older but the changed there underwritter a xmas and now there the same at the rest of them

My mate was offered classic insurance on any car over 10 years old with Axa aslong as he had a main daily driver insured with them too.

Classic policy had a limited mileage clause too.

Your mate is lying ! I enquired about my 2000 Mondeo with Myles O'Reilly (classic car head honcho at Axa) and he said he has a 2000 Alfa and couldn't even get Classic Insurance on it himself.

(I'm sure that should be "lieing" but my spellchecker won't agree with me)

Champion insurance will give you a classic policy on a 16 year old car if its a porsche or unusual merc / bmw

They will only offer 3rd party

Try Carole Nash, but like some others, you'll need a daily driver and it's third party only

Maybe Im wrong, but 16 year old cars dont strike me as classics! The idea that my old 98 1.4 Civic would qualify for classic insurance just seems very odd to me...

I'll confirm with him today but I was with him when he made the call. I just assumed it was axa as his current disc says axa on it. He turned around straight away and said an 03 E39 M5 was covered under the policy!

This guy wouldn't be even into cars as much as me so he would have no reason to lie. It was based on having a caddy on commercial policy as his main car if that made any difference.

old...classic, I guess it's very much open for interpretation and perhaps best discussed over a few pints.

(personally I happen to agree with you though, very few, if any, 16 year old cars would be considered classics in my book. Future classics certainly, but for the moment just old)

16 year old car is too young.

I have a 16 year old GS300 with 150k miles in every day use and as far as I'm concerned its just broken in.

The only reason I am trying to get classic insurance is for the cheap insurance and it's not even a classic car in my eyes either.

and the reason you won't get it is because he Insurance Companies are wise to this. You aren't the first one to try.

I've my 1998 truck insured with Campions as a classic.
It was taken out last year, so it would have been 15.

The guy I bought it off had it insured as a classic with autoline.co.uk (broker) when it was 10 years old.

There are companies that offer classic insurance from 10+ years old, but you'll need to look around. 15+ is easier to get - even the likes of FBD/AXA sometimes quote for that. Another that would quote for 15 years + (but only on certain private cars, and no trucks :P ) was First Ireland.
