Would you ban the Burka?

    Yes.

Many proponents of permitting use of the burka/niqab love to reflect on women's right's to choose their own style of dress.

Along these lines, it should be permitted for a man to wear one while visiting the bank or how about permitting a naked equivalent wandering the streets of Dublin?

Would allowing men to wear it while attending a bank transaction suddenly be permitted by society?

If not for men then not for women. Either everyone wears it or nobody does.

    Ban the burka.

No - people should be able to wear whatever they want in public.

Yeah no one has the right to tell someone they are dressing wrong.

What if somebody decides to wear nothing at all?

It should be banned until women are allowed wear bikinis in Muslim countries-then we're all square!

If they make a choice to wear it, then that's fair enough.

Nobody should be forced to wear it or anything else, but banning it would not help.

If you start banning things like Burka's because they're offensive, next thing you know t-shirts with swears on them will be banned too.

    What a terrible thread

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,056 ✭✭✭_Redzer_

Well I couldn't walk into a bank with a bike helmet on me as that'd probably land security on me, and I think the same goes for the burka.

Seriously, they don't seem to care about supporting our culture in their countries, so why the hell should we in return?

    See thru burkas perhaps?

First and foremost, don't you realise a public forum means that people will have different views than yourself, and this is a relatively active area of debate and so I don't personally understand why a moderator is using the 't' word when it's actively denounced in the forum charter, but that's another point I guess.

Identification of individuals is an important debate in society and it's a pity that some feel the need to resort to irrelevant attacks that have no basis for the thread itself.

No, I'm not a fan of it. But if people want to wear it they're entitled to.

Yes the niqab should be banned because it covers their face!

No - people should be able to wear whatever they want in public.

Really? So people should wear biker helmets in buildings etc??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 292 ✭✭Rory Gallagher

Enver Hoxha banned it(and beards) and the woman just made they're own and kept it inside.
It's insulting to ban it,I hate Religion and its draconian law but banning it will do **** all.

And telling women what they can and cannot wear is not?

Let people wear what they want, if you want to wear a burka go ahead, obviously regulations re security have to be followed and as such I wouldn't see anything wrong with demanding a woman removes her head covering when entering a bank etc.

People can wear biker helmets if they want.

If a business wants to refuse them admittance on this basis, that's fair enough.

If they want to sure, but how many women are forced to wear it, either directly or through peer pressure. Banning the more repressive burka would force the Islamic community to accept the less restrictive hijab.

No, it's not on the grounds of being 'offensive', it's that no other form of dress would be permitted in other circumstances.

    For example:

    > Men would not be permitted to walk into a bank wearing this form of mask and expected to complete what they wanted.

    > Nor would men be permitted to wear anything analogous, such as the biker helmets described in earlier posts.

What? It's illegal to cover your face in banks, shops etc. If you walked into a bank with a helmet covering your face you would be told to take it off

I'll kindly ask again, do you believe people should be permitted to walk around undressed as a naked individual in the name of 'choice'?

And what law is it that prohibits the covering of your face in banks and shops?

I don't know what law but it's common sense. You don't cover your face unless your up to no good.

The only thing it would force is women to be housebound if they're being coerced, or coercing them if it was free choice
Not really a great help to them if they're having difficulties already

I don't see how a hijab is less repressive if it's a symbol of repression as people seem to believe

I've no problem if a private business chooses to refuse people based on what clothing they wear (including the burka). I do have a problem if the law is doing it.

So we should force everyone not to wear it, regardless of their personal choice, just in case someone who didnt want to wear it had been forced to wear it?

You seem to be more interested in bring yourself down to the same level as those you disagree with, rather than using common sense, education and rational thought to help bring people to your level. Though I think you may need a healthy dose of education, common sense and rational thought yourself.

We would hardly ban helmets seen as they are important and actually used for something (safety) but something like a niqab has no benefit.

Why does it bother you so much what other people wear? Is it the covering of the face you have the issue with or is it the connection with Islam?

Yes when in a public place...The same way hoods are not allowed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,166 ✭✭✭enda1

I would say that everyone in public should have to have their face uncovered. That's all.

Don't know how that would square with fancy dress, motorbikes etc. though

I say let them wear what they want. But when it comes to attending court or being asked by a police officer to remove it for identification purposes or cases where it can't be worn for safety reasons they should have to remove it. Basically as long as it doesn't conflict with the law people should just wear what they want.

Shopping malls are private places, the owner of the mall is at liberty to refuse access to anyone covering their face.
