so folks please be so kind and give me any recommendations for:
    petrol
    max 1.4 engine smaller=better
    4-5 k euro max
    RELIABLE (most important)
automatic best would be with 2 gears :pac:
    4-5 doors
Ive chose petrol but on the other hand she will do around 50 km a day 5 days a week so that would be around 12k a year, maybe its worth considering to buy a diesel? And yes, toyota prius is way to big for her in case someone will come up with this idea:D
    thanks

Automatic is awesome. She is right you might try it yourself some day.

I've had an automatic 1.4 petrol polo for 10 years and never had a major issue with it, it's 14 years old now though and starting to show it's age. At one stage I was commuting 40 miles a day for work and would fill the tank once a week. Now I'd get 3 weeks out of it as I'm based a lot closer to home.

Thinking of changing myself though and was looking into a corolla or focus as wanted something a little bigger. The second hand market is very limited.

I love autos. I find it a much more relaxed driving style. Prefer a big engine with it though

Agreed. Although I would want something bigger than 1.4 but that applies Auto or not.

Problem is a lot of small cars nowadays gave nasty automated manual boxes instead of proper auto boxes, eg ford durashift est, toyota MMT, citroen sensodrive, etc etc

Suggest a Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT Auto.

You can even get a hybrid version in the UK

As a person who has allways had an automatic (in a wheelchair) I think they are great with no problem and seem to be able to keep up with manuals. It's funny how here and in Europe that automatics are very hard to get but and it America it nearlly the opposite

When I had my 1.2 Seat I could easily get off the line first to other big cars and pass them

You wouldnt do that that in a Toyota with their MMT, its usually goes something like this:
    *floor it*
    first gear
    second gear
    third-nope-back-to-second-narrowly-avoid-sticking-head-though-windscreen
    fourth gear
    second gear
    third gear

I believe that the Kia Picanto has a proper torque converter autobox, might want to look into one of them .... as mentioned nearly every other manufacturer uses a automated manual gearbox

Don't forget that you can't push start an automatic....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,419 ✭✭✭corner of hells

Mrs corner only drives autos , she's had colts , a yaris and a primera , all were fine .
The yaris and the primers were both about 4 grand when she bought them .... she buys on the basis of the colour , space for sunglasses and what side the cap for then petrol tank is on.

All were good buys , no serious issues and no real NCT stuff.

You'll get a ten year old mk2 prius for around that money. Very easy to live with, economical and loads of room.

    Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT

    Nate

Jazz 1.4 CVT if you need space

99-05 yaris 1.3 torque converter if you are looking for easiest to drive most reliable car ever.

Don't go 1.0 yaris/vitz unless it is only gonna be used in city. you won't save anything on fuel comparing to 1.3

Depends where you are & what you want really. Two years ago, I was in the market for a used automatic car. All I wanted was your bog standard 4 door saloon, from one of the major manufacturers such as Ford, Toyota, Honda etc, without a crazy number of miles on the clock. The budget was 4000-6000 smackers. I had literally dozens of cars to choose from. The fact that I wasn't overly fussy about the make and model and, that I was in Dublin, probably played a big role in that.

The main problem is the auto is only 4 speed with very high co2, above 160 grams from memory so road tax is expensive and resale will be a problem. I wouldn't expect much over 30mpg. You get a 1.6L instead of the manual 1.4L version.

Rare as hens teeth over here at least, good luck finding one for 4k without crazy mileage, if at all.

And going to the uk aint goinna work out price wise for a 4k car.

Yaris auto, gonna be 1 or 1.1 as that's what sold in them so thats whats around second hand, grand car, can do motor way speed, can do city, what more can your missus want, you wont be doing to many 11hour road trips in Ireland.

99-05 Yaris will have either 1.0 or 1.3 lt engines with torques converter conventional autoboxes.

All 1.0lt ones are japanese import vitzes offering a lot of spec but insuring them is a little bit extra hassle.

I owned one for 3 years and it is quite capable, well engineered and reliable small car for your needs. Only complaints I had was 1.0 lt wasn't great powerwise if you have long motorway journeys and I need to spend more time to insure it due to be a japanese import.

Buy an 1.3 UK/irish yaris, you won't have issues above but they have less spec than vitz and a little bit costlier to tax.

It was the cheapest to run car I have seen so far.

I find when I'm driving my Ford Focus 1.6 Auto with cruise control in a straight line on the motorway, I basically have one of those self driving Google cars.

2007 Ford Focus. Bought it from a dealer in Fairview. They wanted 5,200 for it, I got it for 4,800. :D

I have done a lot of driving in it and, I have not had a moments bother with it. The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of power. It doesn't have much power, so overtaking is a bitch. It is fine on the motorway at speeds of over 100 km. But if you are on a national road and, you want a short burst of power to get up to speeds of 80 km-100 km to over take a slow car/tractor, it is annoyingly slow at that. It not because it is an automatic car, as I have not had that problem in other autos I have driven. I think its just a heavy car.

avoid Honda automatic, they're very bad in the US. The best automatic I think is Toyota's 4AT (Corolla,Lexus) and BMW 8AT in newer car.

    No, no, no, no, no!

Possibly the worst autos ever made. I had the displeasure of driving one for nearly a year in London. Massive lag between gear changes (I'm talking 0.75 seconds to 1.5 seconds), slow, rev it to hell.

Even doing a 3 point turn is daunting. You stick it in reverse, push accelerator and nothing happens. Push more, revs go up, nothing happens. Push more and nothing happens, revs go up and suddenly lunges backwards.

The company had about 4 of them in their fleet and they were all like that.

Even the semi auto option was terrible. you could rev the hell out of it to try get a faster gear change…didn't work.

My missus will only drive an auto - she has a 1.8 Avensis, which, slight thirst for oil aside, has been flawless and now has 110k on it. Still drives perfectly and gearbox has never been an issue - it's good on fuel too, for a 1.8 petrol.

It had a little over 48,000 miles on it when I bought it, which wasn't bad for a five year old car. It really was the poster child for "one careful lady owner". :D

I have put another 25,000 odd miles on it since then.
