Buying a VW Golf: Advice pls

Wanting to buy a Golf. Just sold my 01 Golf 1.6.
Looking at a 07 1.4 Sport TSI mileage is a little high 185000km, but the timing chain has just been replaced.
    Priced at €7000

Now I had someone who knows about cars look at it and he's unsure about it, thinks it hasn't been looked after well. I also looked at a Renault Megane 09, I think it's 50,000 km on it which is very low. 1.5 disel, can try get for €7000 also. I don't like it as much but is it the safer option? Just used up driving golfs and like them but know they are dear.
Any advice would be much appreciated!!
    Thanks!

is it the 140 or 170 bhp version? the timing chain did give problems in those engines, but if the change is recent and documented, would be a major plus point.

It's 140 BHP. Chain has been don't recently enough, but I'd need to look at service book not sure when.
Getting very mixed reviews about them. Ppl saying it could be costly to fix it problems arise with the engine. That's what I really don't want as my last golf cost me a bit of money to maintain. Looking for a relatively trouble free one, I know it's always a risk tho with 2nd hand cars.
