    he presumably believes it is also still Uk registered...probably fondly believes he has retained the old number which he will only have done if he put it on retention. He might get the number back, but probably as a non-transferable f he took it back to the UK

    if it was an original Irish reg I'd suspect that, but it's a ZV...he'd have had to have the car inspected and surrender the UK logbook

    Yes he can get the old number back but probably it would then be "non-transferable" as are new numbers allocated to a car when you strip off the number to retention

    You do get the original reg back - I imported a '93 Audi 80 Avant in 2003 and drove it for 8 years, and then sold it to an Irish guy who emigrated to the UK a while later, and he got the original UK K-reg back - gas to see photos of my old car back on its original plates that I remember from all those years ago...
