What would be the typical daily rate for a good electrician? Have just got a quote that is a lot higher than I would have expected. Job is generally checking a new (old) property from a safety point of view and rectifying a few snags.

    150 a day

That sounds a bit more reasonable alright.

I know of self employed sparks subbing work for €22 an hour. So €150-€200 sounds about right

In my opinion you need to employ the services of a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC). An REC will be able to quote you a daily rate for an electrician. The act of employing a unregistered electrician to do this work is a criminal offence. In addition they would not be able to certify the work and they are unlikely to be insured.

    Background:
On the 23rd July 2013 the Commission of Energy Regulation (CER) published the decision paper on the Scope of Restricted Electrical Works (CER/13/147). This means that only a REC can complete electrical work in domestic premises, with the exception of "minor works". These regulations were enacted on 1st October 2013 through the Statutory Instrument Electricity Regulation Act 1999 (Restricted Electrical Works) Regulations 2013. Those found to ignore this may face prosecution.

Minor works are defined on page 11 of this link:

I am curious though, why are you looking for a daily rate?
Why not just get three detailed written quotations for the work (including materials)?

Back in the day a rule of thumb based on material costs was roughly three times the materials costs.......a third for materials, a third for labour and a third for profit. That was a quick estimator.
