I (personal opinion) see no reason why not.

I brought a little yellow Garmin etrex in my carryon luggage through Dublin security going to Norway and they weren't happy. They had no idea what it was and pulled me aside. It is a very common GPS receiver. I thought people in that role would be more savvy about electronics. I was eventually reluctantly waved on.

I flew Girona Shannon a while back and used it during the flight to track progress and speed just out of curiosity. No issue with cabin crew on that.

These devices do not transmit and I fail to see how there could be an issue.

I hope you're not the pilot.

Most modern phones have sat-nav capability, so I'd guess we would have heard by now if there was a problem.

With their approach to shaving costs, you're safer bringing it in case you're called on to help out with navigation.

No. You have to go to the Ordinance Survey Office and by a Map Carriage Certificate, they cost €12.85.

It's illegal to take a map reading device out of the country without a licence.

50 km is a bit close. Memmingen aka munich West is over 150 kilometres from Munich city.

There is an opportunity for debate about bluetooth transmissions from some satnavs but, otherwise, perfect logic OP! And while I sense a recent improvement at corporate level in their customer focus, unfortunately Ryanair staff are not renowned for their grasp of logic.

But shouldn't you be more concerned with the little Hitlers security people at the scanning stations? Their tenuous acquaintance with common sense is legendary and international.

If I were you, I would expect trouble and, if it doesn't happen, GREAT!

Yes I bring my sat nav on Ryan air flights several times a year in my carry on bag.

I'm not sure what their rules are about having it turned on during the flight

A sat nav only receives data so shouldn't screw up any computers on the plane.

Its a good way to get your fastest speed to a interesting number.

Last flight I took a lad got pulled aside for a suspicious item in his carry-on luggage at the security lanes.

What did he have? A fecking power drill!

If it's switched off there shouldn't be an issue.

Yes I have taken my satnav in my carryon with several different airlines (Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Lufthansa, Qantas, Air Berlin & British Airways) and and there is no problem with it. It won't work in the plane however I have tried using it before to see where I was whilst on a Ryanair flight.
