When companies say that you are not gonna be hired for the position you applied for but that they will keep your cv on file in case a suitable vacancy arises etc...

Has anyone had an instance where they they have followed up with another job? Or is it just standard polite speak

I know of a Mechanical Engineering grad that was rejected from a post he applied for with a company in Dublin but was later (about 2 weeks) offered a different job which he subsequently took.

Not the norm really I would think, was the first instance of hearing of it, depends very much I would say on the size of the organisation, bigger ones have a greater chance for the CV to be reviewed by completely different people or teams which may pick out skills that other previous reviewers dont...

Yeah, I have gotten interviews for other roles because they had my CV on file from a previous application.

I applied in August 2012 for a job, interviewed for it in September, didn't get it. Was told my CV was being kept on file, then got hired in July 2013 for a different role in the same company.

Always been the kiss of death for me personally. I'm sure some people get lucky but for the most part it's letting you down gently/covering themselves.

Yes, it has happened for me. Mostly when I was happy in the job I was in, but still.
