my bowley is due for the nct by the end of next month, i rang them up today, i was asked for my name and address, then the reg no of the car, i was told that i was not the regestered owner of the car, i answere i am, that i taxed it yesterday, that the co council were happy that my name was on the log book, it is not enough i was told, i was required to regester the car with them after purchace, i asked had they not the same info as the council, he said yes, BUT on purchasing the car i had to regester it with them, is this correct.

I have never heard of this before. They take their information from Shannon afaik; you shouldnt need to register with them also.

They are talking porkies. I've done many NCT's on used cars I've bought and never once had to register them with the NCT.

is there a chance you gave them the number a bit wrong? have you got the logbook to check the details? Did you NCT yourself last year?

i know that you know that, but some dickhead at their call center wants to play god.

Just go online. Enter reg and then date of first registration and available slot. Bingo, test booked.

You don't need to be the registered owner of the car to present it for NCT. As Mick says, book online and bring ID on the day.

i have done that, its just this guy thinking that he can play god, could it be that he is a failed co.ccouncil candidate

It's more likely that he just hasn't been trained properly.

If you didn't accept the appointment, call them up and book a date. If it's some time in the future, ask them for a date within four weeks or you want your test for free. They'll pencil you in somewhere within four weeks.

However, if you've already accepted a date, you can't do that. Your only choice now is to call for a cancellation.

whats the Gardai's view on the long waiting list. if your stopped will they accept a printout of an email confirming your booking?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭obezyana

I'm pretty sure they can't do anything as long as you have proof that it's booked. I may be wrong tho.

Why would a Guard care about the long waiting time? You have three months before the expiration of the current cert to get the test done and a new cert issued. This cert is needed to drive on a public road. A guard may let you off, or you may get a fine and five points.

They most certainly can, and the driver could find himself with a mandatory court appearance and possible 5 penalty points. Driving without a NCT (when one is required) is an offence regardless if you have a booking or not, the law doesn't permit you drive around just because you have a booking. In practice, a Garda is aware of the delays and is likely to use discretion to not prosecute you if your disc is only recently out (e.g just bought the car) or you've a booking, but don't rely on it.

I'd say the majority of cops would let you off altho it only takes one not to.

I can't see why people leave it to the last minute and then give out when they can't get an immediate test (although I've always found they come up with a test within a few days if you ask nice) and then expect to drive with no test just because they have booked one in three months time on what may be totally derelict car!

You can book a test three months before expiry. Some Gardai may be lenient, but honestly I wouldnt bank on it. A few weeks then maybe. I wouldnt want to be stopped in late July however with a car that is out of test since early May.

It also helps if the car looks roadworthy. Have an obvious defect that will lead to an NCT failure and you might find that their leniency does not stretch as far as you would like it to.

I knew you could book it three months beforehand it's a handy system. Iv actually always had my cars booked in well in advance but this time I took my car off the road at the start of march it's going back on the start of June and in between the nct due date was forgotten about. My nct is due on the 26th of June so I'll keep ringing for a cancelation and I'm pretty sure ill get one soon aswell.

Regarding the car well it's in perfect nick I look after it I'm confident it will fly through the test. So any cop that may stop me will see the car is looked after they will see Iv a test booked and hey who knows he might just let me off...........or maybe notbut in the meantime I'll keep ringing the nct for a cancelation. The car isn't even on the road until next Tuesday, the test is out the 26th so it's not like I'll be breaking any law anytime soon.

And the good ol Irish way.......let there be no panic it will be sorted. :D
