    Hi Folks,

Myself and the family are Flying into Barcelona in July, renting a car and driving up to the south of France.

I'm going to be ther driver.

Reading the terms and conditions on the Rental Company website it states that the Driver must provide a Credit Card in his/her name at time of collection. A debit Card will not suffice.

I don't have a credit card, only a debit card. The other half has a credit card but it's in her name.

Is there any way around this or has anyone got experience of this in the past?

    Thanks.

the way round it for you is that the mrs rents it in her name and credit card and you get put down as 2nd driver.

I've done this a number of times before I had my licence - so perversly down as primary driver even though i wasnt permitted to drive the yoke.
Some places have a 2nd driver for free so it mightnt cost a penny more

Make sure the car hire company knows that you intend to take the car into France.

I looked at that alright and it costs a much to add me to the rental than it does to actually rent the car.

Surprised they agreed to add you as a primary driver without a license. Most places won't.

@OP: If it was me I'd get the OH to have you added as an authorised user on her credit card. The credit card company will then issue a card in your name on her account.

If you don't have a Credit Card you can also get the maximum insurance and leave a deposit for Fuel instead.

Just give them a call and see what the options are.

Have you time to apply for a credit card before the holiday? Might solve a lot of hassles.

When you're pricing it check the small print carefully to make sure you're covered to drive in both countries. A lot of companies will only let you drive in the country of rental, or charge an extra few quid to cover cross-border trips.

Nah, only ever seen that apply to UK/Ireland and Eastern Europe

There doesn't seem to be any problem taking a Hertz car into France but I'd still check with other companies when renting in case there is a restriction, especially one which might invalidate the insurance if you cross into another country.

    Hertz Spain website ..

Hertz vehicles may only be taken into the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal*, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

Hertz vehicles cannot be taken from the Mainland to the Islands, or out from Islands, or from one Island to another one, or from the Islands to the Mainland.

Hertz vehicles cannot be taken into the Ceuta and Melilla Spanish enclaves

There's an interesting restriction if you hire a luxury model .....

Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, convertibles and any vehicle from the Dream and Prestige Collection must not be taken into Italy.

I have hired in spain /driven the car to France on 4 holidays, never had any problems, always checked the conditions first.
Only thing to watch for, especially with hertz through Ryanair is the compulsory fuel purchase.....
