What does 1st, 2nd etc mean beside voting results in newspaper?

Looking at the local election results in the paper, I cant figure it out and fair play to the independent for outlining what it means (not). The reason I ask is that the results can show (for example) 2 SF candidates with 1st beside their name who top the poll in a dublin constituency. Some results for an area have no 1st, 2nd, 3rd beside a candidate's name.

Could be the count that the candidate got elected on?

Yes, the 1, 2 etc. relates to the Count they reached the quota and were elceted. Those that didn't have a number as such, were elected without reaching the quota.

Do they not teach any of this stuff in school?? This is basic Civics...

Civics has been replaced by something called I think SCPE, which is taught in school but for most teenagers it isn't the most riveting of lessons.
How come we don't see groups of schoolchildren at the counts watching it work in practice?
