    Hey all,

Just back from a cycling and when i dropped the front gear down to the small ring my gearing was all over the place, the chain was jumping all over the place on the back cassette, can anyone suggest a potential cause?

If it jumps from cog to cog you might need to adjust the derailleur tension a bit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z69_7e05cDg

If it grinds over the same cog then it or the chain my be worn.

I have this problem too. Wont stay in second easiest gear. Jumps between easiest and third, which is annoying going up a hill.

Anytime this happens I find that a tweak of the barrel adjuster (where the cable enters the rear derailleur) usually sorts things out.

Its a brand new chain and cassette...Both are compatible with one another...Iys fairly fine on the big ring(well the big ring on a compact :o )

    Had the same problem yesterday..

    1. Have you changed the chain recently? It is "recommended" that you change the cassette at the same time (sounds great until you find out that a SRAM Red cassette is over 200 euro)-the chain marries the cassette..After a few spins, if this is the cause, it will settle down

    2. Check the low limit screw

    3. Check the cable tension into the derailleur

    4. Check that the cable is not getting caught, particularly under the bottom bracket-there was a shed load of grit and crud on the roads this week

    5. More likely to cause upset across the range of gears, but check that the lock ring has not come loose.

Hopefully this will be of help..Mine was running sweet today

Also check that the chain is the correct speed (eg 10 speed, 11 speed etc).

And finally!!!! Check the clearance between the jockey wheels and the cogs (that would be the third adjustment screw) It is possible that the chain is slightly too long?

Cheers guys, I had the LBS but the new chain cassette and wheels on the bike, was hoping that they'd have done a better job...I'll have a look at the tension, can that be adjusted by tightening the bolt with spring on the derailleur

I absolutely LOVE those Campy adjusters-a joy to work with!

I had a terrible jumping problem recently which seemed to improve a bit each time I tightened the cable but came back with avengence each ride. LBS people pulled out a very frazzled looking cable (if it were a priest it might have looked like 308444.jpg)

Things are (almost*) back to normal now after a new cable+housing. (*I assume I'll have to tighten the new cable slightly from time to time as it stretches)

If you've just got a new chain and cassette, and it doesn't hop in the "big" ring, then it's probably your 34 on the front which is worn and causing the problem.

So i tightened the gear cable and next to no jumping this evening while out on my spin, had just a little bit of the rear deraileur being a little out on the biggest ring on the cassette while on the front big ring, so its been pretty much fixed, its not a gear i really use, was just testing this evening, thanks for all yere help guys
