First time hatchback buyer - dealer or online?

    Hi all,

Recently passed my test and I'm in the market for a hatchback. Budget is 3500-4000. I wasn't insured on my provisional if that makes much of a difference. I was peeking at a few VW Golfs online but the insurance seems to be a nightmare on these lately so I'm considering looking elsewhere. I'd prefer at most 1.4L Diesel but I am open to a petrol if the insurance remains reasonable. Early 20's male btw. I don't know if I should go through the carzone/donedeal route or if I should just stick to the dealers - I realize they are more expensive but it seems to be worth the price for peace of mind.

I'd prefer a relatively powerful car because I'll be using it for a 70km commute each way (mainly on the motorway) for the next few months, bearing this in mind any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

At your budget you're not goin to be dealing with very salubrious dealers so online route and loads of time and legwork required , chasing up the better cars online within an hour or two of them appearing is the best way to value. Read the buying sticky here on boards.

I'm afraid there will not be much in the way of choice of diesel 1.4 litre cars in your budget. Even 1.4 D-4D Corollas in this price range will be past their best and the 1.4 HDi found in Peugeots and Citroens is painfully slow.

BTW the smallest diesel engine in the Golf is 1.9, in your budget.

I see, what would you recommend in that regard? I suppose I could stretch to 4500-5000 but not too sure. I don't mind what year it is as long as it runs relatively smoothly - the Golf was just my first instinct, I am open to any suggestions that would keep the insurance as low as possible but can still be used on the motorway. I'll take petrol recommendations on board as well if you think they suit my budget more. Thanks.
