    Hi all,
I just bought my first car today. I have the insurance and the NCT sorted and in date but the tax expired last month. The previous owner is sending the change of ownership form away on Monday. I believe I cant tax it until the car is in my name but am I allowed to drive the car in the interim? If I could tax it now I would.
I would appreciate if someone could let me know the rules regarding this situation.
    Thanks!

strictly , no, you cannot drive it.
In practise, most people would carry the paperwork with them to show they had just bought it and hope not to meet a Gard having a bad day. Don't park in a public place, as you may well get a ticket for non-display of tax, which is also an offense even if it is "in the post".

(Bad time of month to buy a car. You will be charged tax back to the start of the month. )

Thanks for the response. I will wait until the ownership changes then. Once I see that it has online can I call them to get my PIN and all that to pay immediately online?

there's a button there for pin retrieval, save you a call.

Excellent. How long does it take for ownership to change over if the original owner posts the form tomorrow?

About 5 working days max. If you keep checking online, you will see a date next to when cert was issued to new owner, when that appears you can retrieve pin which is automated and instant and pay for tax.

TO hijack the thread...I bought a car 2 weeks ago, and the seller was supposed to have submitted the change of ownership form but never did. Now I cannot get hold of him anymore to see if it wasn't sent, and why not - he's not answering calls.
What can I do? I found something online which said there is a resolution process but it can take weeks, and I can no longer find the page where I read that. The tax is up on the car and of course I cannot tax it as I don't have the cert or logbook
