I'm going to the Gaeltacht this summer and I'm wondering what it actually is like?

Very much like any other rural community except some families (though in most cases now the minority) in the area have Irish as their first language and Irish is commonly used in some social institutions such as the local school, church, GAA club etc.

Depending on the Gaeltacht you may hear very little Irish spoken outside of specific settings, ie the GAA club and school may operate through Irish, but social interaction outside of these settings tends to be in English, and in most Gaeltachts the default language also tends to be English, especially for strangers. I.e. if you go into the shop, they will most likely speak English to you first, even if they tend to speak Irish to regular customers who they know have Irish.
Irish continues to be strong in some parts of the Gaeltacht so that social interaction tends to be in Irish in most settings, but these areas have become quite limited.
