Renewing/Upgrading Current Licence

Sorry, but just couldn't find an existing relevant thread anywhere....

Is it possible to "upgrade", so-to-speak, a current/valid/in-date old crappy pink paper slip licence to the new credit card size ones?
I really hate having to carry it separate from my wallet because of its weird size. We'll also be travelling in a few months and I'd love to use a licence that actually doesn't look like it's home-made.

No, you can only replace the old one with new type if it's renewal time, add a category or if you should happen to lose the current one ;)

If you have need to replace a lost or damaged licence or if you have cause to make any amendments to your current licence, such as a new address, category of licence or even to record that you are an organ donor, then you will be called in to get a new licence. If you are that hell bent on getting a new one then maybe you should "lose" it. Don't forget though, it will cost you to get a new one and the replacement licence still only covers you for the period of the old one.

Just put it in the wash then you don't need to report it lost

Ha ha... that thought crossed my mind :D
Yeah, I checked the website and it's 35 quid for a new/replacement licence. Fine with me, just not sure about documents required for replacement over a new application. The application form just lists everything, but doesn't say what you don't need to bring in again considering you've already "proved" a bunch of requirements for a licence.... any ideas?

If your licence is damaged they may require you to have your application stamped at a garda station as per the procedure for replacing a lost or stolen licence. Perhaps a call to the NDLS will clarify this for you.

Yes, I saw that on the form, doesn't say what documents are still required though.

It's form D401; you may print it off from their site.

As I said the notes in the application form do not give the information I said I was unclear about: what documents are required for renewal. There are multiple supporting documents required in general according to the form.

Anyway according to their website, only these are needed for renewal:
    • The appropriate fee
    • Photographic ID
    • Documentation to verify your PPSN
    • A completed NDLS Medical report form if required in your case (presumably not for standard licence)
Also, according to the Application Guidance Notes I just read:
All existing Irish Licence/Permit holders will present with their
driving licence/learner permit and evidence of their PPSN.
plus fee & ID I would presume where said permit is lost, as per the website.

If you're going travelling, then I highly recommend having a new one.

Many pubs / supermarkets where I come from will not accept the old one as a government-issue photo id for alcohol purchase, because it's just do damn dodgy-and-forged looking.

Even better, it looks like personal details change is free...
So I'm either gonna change address or name. Haven't decided yet cos I like having my current long name, but I also have a variant that I use on my Irish passport. I've also no interest to changing to married name.
We might also be moving if our house is sold, so not crazy keen on changing its address to my address as would have to change it again if we move.

Change it twice, that'll be twice as cheap and teach them for charging me for a drivers license record for the wifes car insurance claim :)
