So you're addicted to the internet.... How would you cope without it?

I'll be honest here, but I can't remember the last time I went a day, even without checking my emails. The internet is a medium that has shaped my life like no other, I can't do college work without it because lecturers put all their material up there, I'll want to keep up with all the Star Wars news, and music news. I'm sure many other people have internet addiction and reasons why they keep going back.

So what would happen if you had to go a week without using the internet? Would it make you feel uncomfortable? How much do you feel you would miss out on?

I'd feel like I was missing out on important emails (which probably would turn out to be not that important at all!)

But I'd get a whole lot of books read!

I would be far more productive.

I wouldn't be able to work. Websites aren't much use without the internet.

    I'd get my turf footed.

But I'll get them footed anyway, regardless of internet.

    Step 1. Lie down.

Step 2. Try not to cry.

    Step 3. Cry a lot.

Frightening prospect really. Sitting around at home with wife and kids.....having to actually communicate with each other and have conversations about stuff. To hell with that :D

It was fine until I got a smartphone. Now its first thing in the morning, last thing at night. Most of it irrelevent rubbish. Losing some sleep over it too. I think I'll be investing in an alarm clock and leaving the phone downstairs from now on. Actually I'm going out to buy one now.

    (the house looked great though)

I check it all the time, and spend hours on it, but I'm actually grand without it the odd time I've been somewhere with no coverage for a period of time, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't REALLY miss it except for to check work related emails every couple of days.

I like my bubbles of isolation, though.

Went on a cruise with the whole family of parents, siblings, nieces, nephew, sisters in-law and two grannies a few years ago, two weeks with no internet. On the second last port of call there was a Starbucks with their tempting free wi-fi. The entire family bar the grannies fell in the door with their ipads and phones in hand like drowning men clinging to a life raft, me included.

I checked those all important mails and messages, and not a single one was that important. Unless you rely on the web for work, the internet will get along fine without you and you without it unless you're really addicted. We talked a lot on that holiday, read a lot, went on a lot of outings together, t'was great. The internet is great and I love it, but sometimes it just gets in the way.

When I go on holidays I manage just fine without it. It's only when it's easily available I spend lots of time on it.

Jaysus. No internet is a terrifying prospect. Imagine having to pay for things, like music, films, or porn.

And that's just the start of it.

    Mother of Christ.

Everytime I go up North, and that's regularly enough, I get tetchy and twitchy turning off my data going through Blacklion.
Then I come back down, turn it on again, and there's one spam email and a candy crush request on facebook

I couldn't. I wouldn't be able to do my job. I use it for a lot of class planning and ideas and grammar and stuff (what I'm doing right now) and I really depend on it. I also couldn't keep in touch with family and friends, couldn't use Boards, couldn't read the news...I'd lose the plot completely. To think 4 years ago I didn't have my own computer; not sure how I survived.

I'm addicted to the internet too, but when I go on holidays, I go off the grid completely. I turn my phone off and avoid computers. My job and many of my hobbies require me to be on the internet all the time, so getting away from it is relieving in a strange way.

Everyone would no longer be an 'expert' which is actually a good thing instead of people quoting some rubbish article about how aspartame/phenylalanine (sweetener) is dangerous.

(quote this and be prepared to point me in the direction of an actual study.)

Like a few others here I usually go without it when I'm on holidays. Strangely enough I usually miss boards the most. :) Well that and the RTE Player. I don't check my facebook or email much these days so could do without those.

I don't think I have ever used the internet.

I'd go crazy for a week and then calm down and carry on.
I would be out of a job though as I work with the internet tubage.
