    Here's the details:
    Participating Dealers :

Cycle Centre 1 Drummartin Road, Kilmacud Road, Lower Sillorgan, Dublin 14, Ireland
Victoria Cross Cycles LTD Victoria Cross, Cork, Ireland
Garys Cycles Quay Street, Sligo, Ireland
From 15th May until July 31st,(...) All we ask in return is that you hand over your old tyres (any non Continental brand) and that you also provide us with some feedback on your experiences with the new tyres, via the feedback form on this website.

We're offering both the 700x23 & 700x25 sizes of the tyre, plus two inner tubes, with a total market value of £71.88.

"Each dealer will receive a limited amount of tyres from Continental. If the dealers supply is exhausted prior to 1st June, then the offer is no longer available from that dealer."

Called the Dublin shop. They have no knowledge of this at all. There is some sort of price reduction on a Specialized tyre if you bring in old ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭dakar

    Also:
The dealer will fit two Grand Sport tyres and two Race28 inner tubes at his premises upon receipt of the customers old tyres (non Continental brand), which will be disposed of by the dealer.

No tyres or tubes will be handed over to any customer who does not present his/her bike for the fitting of the tyres.

No good turning up with worn tyres in hand. Must check with my LBS on the list to see if they're actually participating.

Hollingsworth cycle center Stillorgan is not participating in this scheme. I repeat not participating in this scheme They haven't been contacted by Continental.

Sent a complaint via their rate the tyre section, pretty ****ty not to have even a few, I'd understand if they only had a few each but to put up shop names without telling them is poor form.

    Hello everyone,

I'd just like to clear this up as much as possible so apologies in advance for the long post.

We're Life-Cycle, we don't post here too often unless we feel we can help so I can't post a link just yet but we're on cycle.ie.

We're the wholesale distributor in Ireland for Continental Tyres on the cycling side of the brand so we've been involved in the Irish side of the tyre amnesty.

At present, Irish shops can buy from us in Dublin, or go to some of the UK distributors.

I can see there has been some confusion here as to the shops that are listed, but I will clear it up as much as I can from our point of view and understanding, and also encourage you to go to the shops that we deal with because they are our Top 5 customers for Continental Sales.

So, here's what the situation is:

    1. There are only a select number of stores that get to participate in this, and they are picked simply as the 5 stores in Ireland that do the most sales for Continental with us.
    2. Once they are picked, we hand the details over to Continental who will then co-ordinate the tyre amnesty with them and ship the tyres as part of the amnesty directly to that store (as opposed to through us)
    3. Each store will then follow the terms of the Tyre Amnesty which are:

    A) The amnesty will run at participating dealers (Independent Bicycle Dealers) from 15th May until 31st July 2014.
    B) The dealer will fit two Grand Sport tyres and two Race28 inner tubes at his premises upon receipt of the customers old tyres (non Continental brand), which will be disposed of by the dealer.
    C) No tyres or tubes will be handed over to any customer who does not present his/her bike for the fitting of the tyres.
    D) Each dealer will receive a limited amount of tyres from Continental. If the dealers supply is exhausted prior to 1st June, then the offer is no longer available from that dealer.
    E) Customers are asked to give feedback about their new tyres via the 'Tell us what you think' page on the amnesty website
    F) Spot prizes will be awarded to customers who have submitted their feedback forms.
    G) Dealers will only use these tyres for the Continental Tyre Amnesty and cannot use for regular aftermarket sales.
    H) Dealers are obliged to take the old tyres from the customer, cut the beads and dispose of.
    I) Continental will also provide this amnesty service at selected events through the Spring :
    i) 25th May - Welsh Wild West Sportive (Aberystwyth)

ii) 8th June - Dragon Ride (Margam Park, South Wales)

iii) 22nd June - Dartmoor Classic Sportive

    J) Each event will be limited to 100 tyres and fitting will take place on the eve of the rides where possible and on the morning on the rides. We are also able to fit tyres post event.
    K) Customers old tyres will be taken from them and destroyed.

So, why are you seeing some shops listed that aren't taking part?
The short answer is, I don't know for certain. The long answer is that I am guessing, the UK distributors have picked some of their customers in Ireland to take part, but maybe haven't told them about it. So I can't speak for those stores.

For us, we've picked the best stores, told them about it, and it is being co-ordinated with Continental. If they don't have the stock yet, then this is due to Continental having not delivered the stock to the store yet but they will get it.

Now what you're most concerned about. The 5 Irish stores that are definitely taking part in it are:

    The Edge, Kinsale Road, Cork
    North Coast Leisure, Portrush, Antrim
    LK Bikes, Letterkenny, Donegal
    Top Bicycle Shop, Clontarf, Dublin
    Top Bike, Ennis, Clare

So I'd encourage you to go those stores as they are good guys and some of them put a huge amount back into cycling.
If you go into the store and they don't have stock, they will soon. If a staff member doesn't know about it, they might not have been told, but those stores are taking part.

Hopefully that clears it up for you. If you ever have any questions on the brands we distribute, feel free to email us, sign up to our newsletter on cycle.ie, or follow us on our social media.
Apologies for the formatting, did the best I could with the restrictions of such a low post count.

Just remember though, the deal is that the dealer will fit two Grand Sport tyres and two Race28 inner tubes at his/her premises upon receipt of the customers old tyres (non Continental brand), which will be disposed of by the dealer.

Where would one find the list of participating dealers? Currently in the UK and would be silly not to avail

Could that post by the Continental distributor be seen as a form of marketing? While it provides (some) clarification, it seems a limited unfair to many good shops.

Unfair in which way? If the other shops aren't definitely participating in the offer then what can the distributor do about it? The alternative would be that if the distributor had not clarified anything at all and had left us guessing.

Just to be clear, they are not the only distributor taking part and their list of shops is not the list of all the shops partaking (according to a distributor in the UK who responded awfully quickly to my bitch and moan about listed shops having no clue). Unfortunately there seems to be no list with all shops, it just seems to be a case of different distributors may or may not be running the scheme.

Did anyone manage to successfully avail of this scheme? Has it been and gone already, or do the dealers continue to disavow all knowledge?

Tried Victoria cross in Cork when it came out, they hadn't heard about it. Still waiting to hear back from them. Think the edge were doing it but didn't call there.

Is the information not in post number 9 on this thread?

I know Top Bicycle Shop in Clontarf has finished with this offer.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks. I've dropped the latter an email; might stick my head 'round the door of both tomorrow.

Seems a bit odd that the stores are keeping so quiet about this (or are so poorly informed by the supplier, as the case may be). Isn't the point of a publicity stunt that it's well-publicised?

LK Bikes posted on FB that they were participating in the amnesty and that they would post further details the following days but never did. My guess is the tyres went to their friends loyal customers and no one else managed to avail of the offer.

Yeah, that was a suspicious thought I had, too. Perish it, of course.

I have further intelligence on this, Cork cycling comrades! Got a pair fitted today at The Edge -- not the one on Kinsale Road, though, the North Main Street branch. Pokey little shop, and more "fitness" than "bikes" -- seems very odd they're the main location for this, a specifically cycling promotion. They do have an ad up about it, though it's just an A4 sheet in their window. €8 fitting charge per tyre. Very nice they seem too (though to be fair, given the state of my existing tyreage, a huge improvement is hardly a surprise). I was also (half-?)jokingly told fitting charge would be €50 per when I went to collect -- apparently I have giant mutant rims, and getting them on was a real bugger. (Which I kinda felt myself, on previous tyre changes, so that almost made me feel a bit better, that it wasn't just my own incompetence.) Old tubes not returned, as well as the tyres, which wasn't 100% clear to me in advance, though I did suspect it. Judging by the shocking state of what I came in on, not much of a minimum standard for the "tradein" -- not beyond being round(ish) and holding air, at least.

When I initially enquired, I was told they had "a few" left, and when I went to have them fitted, the guy made a remark about having a pair "kept" for someone, so I can't say they whether there's any more to go. Didn't ask in Victoria Cross (though I did speak to a different cycleshopizen who didn't think that VCC were actually doing it).
