I've just moved house to rural wexford and have been told that the line will support 1.5 - 2Mb maximum. I know this is very slow - but just exactly how slow is it? Would I be able to watch things like youtube / ted talks etc? What about browsing - will it take ages for a page to open?

Any other ideas as to my options? I know my mobile phone connection isn't great and I can't use the internet on my phone at home.

    Heeeelllllpppppp

depends on how many people use it at same time. browsing will be fine but youtube will be slow and patchy. Also if it will support that speed doesn't mean you actually get that speed. Have you looked into mobile solutions??

am willing to look at anything! I don't think mobile options would be any good judging by my phone?

Just about good enough for Netflix: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306

With YouTube, you can select the quality by clicking on the cog-shaped icon at the bottom right of the video: 240p, 360p, etc. The higher the figure, the better the quality.

Move back to an urban area!!

Webpages should load ok as long as there aren't too many large graphics on it.

But you can certainly forget about youtube HD or Ted talks in HD.

That speeds not great but it gets things done. I have 1.7meg after moving out of cork city where I had 120meg with upc. You tube works fine just a bit slower, online games work just fine, netflicks works ok but at times may stop to buffer but this does not happen often. Just remember to turn it to standard instead of hd. Steam works fine just have to leave big downloads overnight hope this helps.

    What do you mean?

The line at my gfs house is the same. Unfortunitely the average speed when I test it is even worse at around 0.5
    Youtube barely works.

    What do you mean?

I remember a load of hype a couple of years back about the roll out of good internet access throughout Ireland but still to get decent internet connections you have to live in an urban area!! THe disparity between urban and rural (and I'm not that far from the town) is crazy - in town they're offering up to 100Mb and less than 10 mins away I can't even get 2! I wasn't expecting anything superfast but am amazed at how bad it is ....... that's all

See, the problem here is two things:

    1. You don't understand how broadband works. The longer your telephone line is, the slower your broadband. Telephones lines lead back to the telephone exchange. These exchanges are usually located in towns and villages. When buying a house, you buy one beside an exchange or a VDSL cabinet.

    2. You obviously didn't do any research on broadband in the area. This was a poor decision in this day and age because we've been dependent on broadband since 2006/2007. Now you're stuck with a house and terrible broadband speed.

If you're unhappy with your broadband speed, you only have yourself to blame.

I'm so sorry if I somehow offended you with my predicament but do think that's a bit excessive! I do understand how broadband works and have a friend living very nearby that has much faster broadband so I expected something similar. I don't need to explain my reasons for moving.
Please don't bother answering if all you're going to do is insult someone

What part of Wexford are you in?
There are probably multiple fixed wireless options such as Carnsore Broadband.

Thanks for this - I've checked Carnsore Broadband out and have requested a survey. Do you know if they are good and is the service reliable?

Were in rural Cavan and on a 1.7mb broadband connection.
We have very little packet loss etc.

YouTube works near all the time. We use Netflix for TV and it's so reliable we ditched sky at Christmas. Regularly I see the kids running Netflix and YouTube simultaneously. RTE player and RTE live works fine.
Surfing the web is fine. Pages load quickly. Sending/receiving large emails is no problem.

Never tried VOIP though as we have no need at the moment.

    Brian - that's great thanks.

For anyone thinking about checking out Carnsore Broadband - it seems they are invite only and you can't just apply to join them!

    What? you sure about that?
I've never heard of that before.

Just Google for broadband in wexford or something and it should give many options.

I thought it was strange but that's what they told me. Am checking out some other options too

I wasn't insulting you. Feel free to report any insults to the moderators. Also, why would I be offended? I don't really care about your predicament. I am, however, very critical of people who stupidly buy homes in rural areas and then blame the Government or other people for the lack of services in the area, which is exactly what you did.

You don't have to explain your reasons for moving but don't blame Eircom just because you can't get reliable speeds. You can only get reliable speed in urban areas and near VDSL cabinets. If you did actually know how broadband worked, you would have bought a house in a better area rather than putting yourself in this predicament.

Your friend could be living beside a VSDL cabinet but you can only get good speed from those if you're 2.0 km from the cabinet.

Did you even inquire about the speed of your line before you bought the house?
    .......................................

If you feel insulted by anything I said here, then you must be very easily offended and that's not my fault.
