My big thrill arrived on Friday. Two boxes containing 100 copies of the new book. And where was I? Playing golf. At least the delivery guy carried them into the house or my wife would have been really miffed.

    Here's the front cover:

    2m3gqvb.jpg

I'm giving away two copies to the Boards crew. Simply reply below and tell us your favourite golf course - explain why if you want to. And if anyone says Frankfield, Fernhill or Dublin Mountain there'll be trouble.

Cheers Kevin the cover looks inviting. Very kind offer too.

Favourite course is The European. There are loads of reasons why namely; course setup, scenery, condition, Pat Ruddy bring so eccentric and I could go on but mainly because the place made me wanna play golf until the day I get my hips replaced.

    Hi Kevin,

Best of luck with the new book.

Hard to pick a favourite course as there are so many good ones out there to enjoy. I do have fond memories of Naas Golf Club which I recently re-acquainted myself with only last month. The memories are going back 20 years to the times I used to play there as a youngster with my father and friends when we hadn't a care in the world. Always seemed to be good weather back then as well.

Looks great Kevin, best of luck with it! Il go for the mighty Belmullet, which I enjoyed for the first time last July. Magnificent, despite the weather

Best of luck with the book!

I take it the 100 copies is for starters?

So far my favorite is Headfort New, challenging on a bad day but great confidence booster on a good day.

Noticed it on Amazon last week Kevin, amazing what those Amazon logarithms can do!!
In many ways I think that my favourite course has to be one I play a fair bit but at the minute I'm going to think of a course I'd like to play tomorrow above all others and I'm going for Macreddin.
With a dodgy back and neck this course is a two hour drive for me and a significant trek once there, and then there's the drive home afterwards!
But for Macreddin I'd do it because it's just jaw dropping the job McGinley has done, such a challenge and variety, what a routing and such a memorable place.
If only I could dig it up and move it down the road...

Congrats on the publication Kevin, you're living our dream!

Best wishes on the book Kevin -it has a hard act to follow after Hooked !!
Favourite golf course (outside of my home club Tullamore) must be Portarlington -nice challenging course but not in a heart attack way if that makes any sense. some great people over that way too - visitors are always made welcome.

Played the Intermediate Scratch Cup also Keano. What a day for it -pissin' rain almost everywhere else in the country and 90 in the shade down in Bally Bee.:D:D:D. Super day all round (and got cut 0.6 too!!)

It'll always be Mullingar for me. Great course with a rich history of top scratch cup winners (McIlroy, Harrington, Clarke ...etc...).

But really I'll always remember caddying for my Dad on a Sunday morning (after Mass of course! :D).

Best of luck with the book Kevin!

    It's Mulranny for me:
A petite lass, naturally beautiful, she's not a fan of makeup, she was the girl next door and you don't get jealous as she keeps herself to herself.....
But she's got a trick or two up her sleeve in the bedroom and that always makes me leave with a smile.

Watch out for the sheep sh*te though!

    Well done Kevin.

First time I met you, I asked why you didn't write a book like above.
You told me it was on way.

    Will buy one in am.

Enniscrone for me. Not a golf course for me.
    A part of my life.

best of luck with the book, mine is galway bay golf resort, as this was my first proper links course to play and the look of the bunkers and greens made my day..

Has to be Newcastle West for me. First proper course I played. My grandmother was a member and she got me into playing golf so it'll always be a special course to me

My favorite is the golf course in Birr Co. Offaly. Its a hidden gem IMO with a inland links feel, blind holes, and some fantastic surroundings of deciduous forrests. I get to play there about 3 times a year love it.

Best of luck with the book Kevin, Westport for me...so many childhood memories fill the cup, must get my arse down there for a game

Best of luck with the new book Kevin.

I'll say Druids Glen. Only played it once but been looking forward to getting back ever since.

Best of luck with the new book. For me it has to be Rush only nine holes but the views of Lambay from it are great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 668 ✭✭✭Dtoffee

Thats great news Kevin, Im sure it will sell out. As for my favourite course ..... I would go for Dooks, every club in the bag will be used and every shot a test as you work your way around the 18 holes surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

Then you go in to the clubhouse and the Kerry hospitality will be in full flow as 'the Baron' (D.O'G) rips us Dubs to shreds with a twinkle in his eye and Johnny quietly serves you the perfect pint.

Well done on publishing your new book, Kevin. I look forward to the read.

Connemara (Ballyconneely) is one of my favourite courses. I like it because it is a fair test for the average golfer, has beautiful views of the Atlantic coastline and the Twelve Bens and is not too hilly (excepting a few holes on the back nine).

Holes on the front nine are quite open and flat, wind being the most severe element that you will have to contend with. Even so, you need to be on top of your game to score well, particularly on holes that are upwind or side to wind.

The back nine is much more interesting and challenging, with the long par three thirteenth that tees off over a valley to an elevated green. Depending on wind direction, driver will be the club of choice for most golfers on this hole. The next hole (a par 5) offers absolutely fabulous views of the Atlantic Ocean from another elevated tee.

To finish, the 17th and 18th are back to back par 5s, both with highly elevated sloping greens and sea views. Finally, there is the well appointed modern clubhouse with a good bar-food menu that you can enjoy while taking in excellent views of the surrounding area.

For my favourite away course I've picked one I've only played a handful of times but have always enjoyed it - The Heritage.
My favourite local course is obviously Moate.

    Birr

First golf course I ever played. Had played only pitch & putt beforehand. Offaly were in an all Ireland hurling final the same day and the course was empty thank god. Only got to play 10 but that was me hooked...only for birr I probably wouldn't have got the chance to dunk my third shot into the water at the 18th hole in adare last night :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭thewobbler

Sandy Hills. Such a challenge, I doubt I'd ever put together a solid round there even if I played it every day, but a proper visual treat and a wonderful rollercoaster of a journey.

Congrats and best of luck with the book Kevin..it will make it's way into my collection one way or another. Look forward to reading it.

Lahinch is my choice....classic links golf, always in great condition, some of the best par 4's in links golf.

    Congrats with the book.

Favourite course so far.. Portsalon GC. Fanad Co. Donegal

Short story long, Was booked into Rosapenna last March for the Tuesday,Weds and Thursday and was playing both Rosapenna's and Portsalon for the three mornings we were there.

Finished work later than expected had to beat my way down the M50 to collect a friend of mine in Sandyford before we made the long drive north, neither of us had played a links course and amazingly neither of us had ever been past Letterkenny. Weather was miserable leaving Dublin, we were both expecting the worst with wet gear packed and plenty of dry socks and clothes, at one point we were contemplating cancelling the trip altogether . Arrived to Rosapenna in complete darkness tired and weary and dreading the morning, had a few pints in the hotel and straight up to bed. Woke up nice and early to a stunning day, with zero wind. Standing on the 1st tee box in Portsalon and admiring the views in balmy sunshine was one of the best days ive had in a long long time. The weather stayed warm for the 3 days we were there and we played Tom Morris and Sandy Hills but nothing compared to that day in Portsalon, it was just special, even if the scoring wasnt.
