For DH you'll need the full face and some body armour too.....

Well a Talon is a basic cross country style bike, a regular helmet should really be fine. The sort of spins you'd do on that bike you couldn't wear a full face it would get so hot and uncomfortable. Just go slowly, find your level and don't take too many risks to begin with.

As changepartners says, your's is a basic XC bike and wouldn't be suitable for technical downhill courses. Even Enduro riders with 150/160mm of travel and extremely technical terrain don't usually wear full face helmets ... a normal bike helmet will be fine!

At the risk of sounding like an ass, how can you be 'big into' something if you have no idea even what helmet you need for it? Not helpful post from me I know but it just doesn't sound right as a post and almost sounds like trolling?.....coupled with the fact that you're asking about taking a hard tail down fast downhill tracks, and while I've seen some lads do it, they would be experienced enough to know what helmet they needed and would be in a very small minority. Screams trolling to me. If not then sorry for the unhelpful post..

okay i like going up to ballyhouras tracks as often as possible. I normally take a normal helmet. BUT i want to know if it would be safer to buy a full helmet

No need for a full face in ballyhoura. A full face would be overkill for XC riding

Ive been there a good few times. I had to wear a full face for the Bluegrass enduro last year, due to regulations, but has my normal helmet with me for between stages. The heat in the full face is cruel.

Full face on xc trails will completely overheat your head and you'll not be getting enough air in because you won't have the speed a wearer of a full face in dh would get. You may be confusing the incline of a trail as being down a hill but that isn't what's referred to as downhill. A good compromise between the two helmets would be an enduro specific lid which gives slightly better protection without the compromises of a full face.

Example above but not necessarily that one as urge can be a bit rich for a lot of casual riders if you're not racing but you get the idea of the style that an enduro lid is...
