Gas BBQ that takes Lava Coals

I wanna buy a Gas BBQ - but I want one that takes Lava coals for that real bbq taste without the hassle of charcoal. I would also like one with a side burner - so if the electricity goes out, I can boil a kettle or saucepan.

Any I've seen last year I don't think was suitable for coals...

    Anyone seen any?

All you need is a grille above the burners and put the Scoria on top of the grille.
They heat up and the fat burns as it drips onto them.

I haven't seen any gas BBQs with two grills! Any I've seen just has the burners and no space for a grill or coals.

All you need is 50mm or so of space for the grille and rocks.
The grill you cook on sits above the rocks by another inch or so.
    Look around, they are available.

I was in the same situation, my gas bbq has nothing and you might as well just take your kitchen hob outside and use that, had the same effect

What I did was buy a smoker box and some wood chips. Drop it in your BBQ on top of the gas flames, wood chips burn and smoke and give you an excellent BBQ flavour.

There's loads on amazon, like this:

AFAIK the lava rocks do not give a barbeque taste - they are just stones that can take, and retain, the heat.

Yeh that was my understanding too

I think they are supposed to give more of a smokey taste, plain gas doesn't burn the oil and fat off, Scoria has a lot of holes in it that absorb the fat and then allow it to burn off.
Honestly with all the faffing about with woodchips soaked in water etc you might as well use proper charcoal.
Namchar burns hot and long and gives a great taste.

My IL's have a gas bbq with lava coals and when the fat drips onto the hot coals they give off smoke, like charcoal. Otherwise I may as well take the kitchen hob outside as you say!!

I went looking today and none of the bbqs were suitable to coals. They had a "flame tamer" which is meant to do the same job as lava coals but I wouldn't imagine they do. Can't find one suitable for lava coals anywhere??
