Painting over damp stains

    Hi I have some damp stains on white ceiling and I have painted white over then a few times but dark stains still come out. Has anyone any advice on how I can sort this.

    Just buy a tin of "stain blocker". There's different types and brands but any paint shop will have it.

    No need to buy a stain blocker as some of them are rubbish (mainly the water-based ones).
    Just use a oil-based undercoat or flat oil.If its a biggish area use a mohair roller.

    thanks for the help. I had heard of using the undercoat but wasn't sure the white emulsion would paint over it.

    So long as you use undercoat (oil based is best) and not a gloss, you can paint emulsion over no problem.

    I have a problem with hardwall plaster the house was let get cold and damp so the paint peeled in places and the plaster is dusty underneath, what is the best way to treat this

    I am no expert , but if it was me, I would remove all the loose plaster and re skim walls again and leave to dry then before painting.
