I'm heading to the South of France for a week in June. I've been before but its my girlfriends first time. Staying near Antibes. I plan to visit all the main places like Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco etc - but wondering about things worth doing or seeing in each. I have a rental car so I can get off the beaten track - I was thinking of going up into the mountains - or crossing the border into Italy too. I know it can get pretty expensive so I'm trying to keep the costs down. Any recommendations of things to do and places to see would be appreciated :)

Gorge de Vedon. Inland, stunning scenery, river waters sports.

Maybe a bit further inland than you planned to venture but you could give Monaco a miss instead.

Grasse, near Cannes, worth a day trip, lots of perfume factories with free tours, lovely views from the balcony and a very nice old town to explore.

St Paul De Vence is a very good example of a walled hill top old town with lots to see also an artist colony if that interests you.

Drove up the mountains behind Nice/Cannes last time and it was well worth it, great view, much higher than anywhere in Ireland with lots of edge of the mountain old roads, called the Napoleon Route (there is a modern road also I think if preferred), some lovely little villages to stop for breaks.

The train from Cannes/Nice to Ventimigilia in Italy is well worth it for the views, we went on a Friday (I think) as it is market day in Ventimigilia, don't think it cost much more than driving there would have when you add up fuel & tolls.

    Enjoy
