Anyone have any knowledge of the D5 in the volvos, is there any known turbo issues or anything else to look out for on the D5 from 05/06/07. I know they have long service intervals and are fairly reliable, the newer ones have 185bhp and are less efficient than the 163bhp from 03/04 etc. Wondering which one is better long term.

    Moved to Car Buying Advice.

On topic, the D5 is a good engine. Supposedly the most fuel efficient afaik.

Yeah they seem good on paper, and i presume they get better mpg than the bmws/audi's of similar vintage.. 3.0d and 2.5tdi etc, which seem very bad mpg wise..32/35 mpg in both cases if using an auto box.

    Been 3 S60 D5s in my family. A 2006, 2010 and now a 2014 model.

None have given a days bother and been serviced at proper intervals. The 2006 and 2010 cars had about 300,000km on them when they were changed.

Superb engine too, nice and refined and plenty of pace. About 45mpg too.

Check for inter-cooler swelling, knock from front shocks, click/clunk from drive shafts, auto box benefits from a change of lube after 100k miles.

It's a great engine, sounds good, economical if driven sensibly, fun (but hard on tyres) if driven hard. Doesn't handle like a BMW, doesn't ride like a jag, but not a lot worse.

    Any link?

Have seen D5's go to big mileage, but never quite that high. 300 ish kilometres is the highest I've seen, and that was still pulling like a train.

Would be 163ps at that vintage, which is far from being strained, so would be capable of massive mileage.

No major issues as far as I'm aware. Think timing belt is around 180k, so should have been done twice at least at this stage.

Different car - the V40 is build on a different platform, with different engines.

It's worth remembering that the 2007 2.4 diesel is the same engine/car as the 2005 D5; 163 hp, re-mappable (by Volvo Polestar) to 200ish and 400 nm torque.
