What's the governments view on vaping?
What is James Reilly view on the issue and should we be worried?

Is there any politician in Ireland that is a cheerleader for vaping?

Will as well, just for punishment. How bad do you think it will be? Very bad I expect.

You know when Dougal's talking about the 'spider baby'? These experts always remind me of that. I heard a fella took a drag off one a them things and his head fell off etc.

His office just parrots what the WHO say, which is a little worrying.

The most positive response I received from all my correspondence was probably from Shane Ross.

    Dear Samba,

Sorry for the delay . I wanted to consider your email and reply personally.

Many thanks anwat. . I am of the opinion that e-cigarettes should not be classified as a medicine and should continue to be available for purchase over the counter.

I have not been convinced thus far that putting them under prescription would do anything to help those who are making an effort to quit smoking. Indeed it would certainly make them less accessible .

Making the alternative of e-cigarettes less available to people seems to achieve nothing for the ordinary punter other than another obstacle in their way as they attempt to give up smoking.

so you can count on my support .

    Best wishes,

    Shane

I should also give Olivia Mitchell a mention, while she didn't really state her position or opinion, she was generally supportive for my concerns about the TPD and she promptly responded to all my mails.

So, I want to contact some politician about vaping. If I don't tell them, they wouldn't know my experience with vaping.
I was thinking about my local Dail politicians and the Health minister. Would I bother contacting the local election politicians? The EU politicians would be good too. Should I post them or email?

    What information will I include?
    Name
    Address
    Age
    Nationality
What age I started at, and how long I have been smoking
Other methods I used to try to quit, and how successful they have been
How long I have been vaping
    How successful vaping has been
Type of vaping device I use
How many people I have convened to take up vaping
Where I get my equipment eg internet\local shop
Why I use a sweet flavours over tobacco flavours
Would I go back to smoking cigs if I couldn't get my vaping equipment

Is there any other details that I should include, that would matter to politicians?

All of the above is good, I assume refillables have been most effective for you? Give them a mention if so.

It might be no harm to also mention that taxing e-cigs aggressively would be counter-intuitive to public health. The savings a smoker can make can be as powerful a motivator as the health benefits (we won't know how this will be handled until we adopt the TPD).

Most importantly, I think that you should mention that the science isn't stacking up in favour of the WHO's position on e-cigs. You might highlight the recent debate that took place in Wales. Kirsty Williams and Darren Millar did an excellent job of debunking some of the myths that politicians like to selectively parrot. The gateway/normalisation argument and nicotine is bad etc...

See text transcript is here if you want to quote them...

You've also got the TPD as a perfect example of how not to regulate e-cigs, so feel free to take any piece of the silly legislation they drew up and call it out for what it is, ridiculous. One example - 10ml bottles.

The thing to remember about the TPD is there's nothing any of them can do about it now that it has been voted through. But there's no harm in highlighting how this is another example of how poor policy was drawn up based on non-existent or bad science.
