How much might Audi charge?

    Hi All,

    The car in question is a 2008 B8 A4 2.0TDI SE

I've got an issue with my ESP system for a few months now, gave the car to my trusted indy mechanic who couldn't help me so he took the car to two other indy mechanics but none of them could sort it.

They all told me that this was a job for Audi and that I would need a new steering wheel angle sensor, cant remember the error code they gave me.

They also said that Audi will want to perform an OBD scan before any work begins and the sensor they will replace is located under the steering wheel so all the work could be completed in less than two hours.

My question is, how big a bill (ball park figure) can I expect from Audi?

But more importantly, why is it that only Audi can do this work?

    Regards
    Gary

....you need to seek out George Dalton..... There is no need to bring it to Audi really.

I've an 2011 A4 & got a service recently @ Audi North Dublin. Their labour rate is €145/hr + VAT @ 13.5%! So not cheap. Their charges for parts were reasonable though. Its the labour: you're paying for all the dolly birds etc around the place! :D

Wow massive labor cost especially on a big job.

I haggle with them over the rate, I paid a lot less than that

    Gazzmonkey,

Not exactly up to date but I had the steering angle sensor changed on my Audi A4 in 2006. It was 230 for parts, 70 for labour and 40 VAT. So 340 total.

I had it done in an Audi garage but that was where I was getting all my work done at the time. I don't know why you would have to have it done by Audi but my guess would be that the steering angle sensor is part of the air bag slip ring, so I assume that they air bag system gets messed with when the work is done. So perhaps it is a safety issue of some sort.

Thanks everyone for sharing advice / experience with me, I really gotta get the finger out and get this sorted so I can pass my NCT, not pleased with the idea of getting penalty points.

I do have other minor issues too, the fan inside my dash has started making a whistle noise at low rpm setting. Also, I'm now getting a mild vibration when applying the brakes, slightly warped disc I suspect. Also, last week when I put the window up, it went down instead lol.

But I'll start a different thread to troubleshoot that stuff soon.

Where are you living? There's a few VAG specialists around the country.

So I went to Audi to have the ESP fault looked at (never been to a main dealership before so I couldn't resist) and they confirmed what the indy mechanic thought, IR sensor under the steering wheel is blown and needed replacing. Will cost me €268 for a new one, shocking prices.

Had a nice time waiting around examining the new Audi models up close though!

Thats the point, while you come to the conclusion your car is a goner due to failures and high maintainance(may not be the case but you get the idea) and while you sip some nice coffee and they give you a nutri grain bar you take a liking to a shiny new car and boom you get hit with a bill for 40 grand:D
Id repair it fwiw, Im shocked how cheap good used cars are these days compared to their new prices. There is no discernible noise, wear or play in the controls at all in my 02 Audi with 90k on the clock and its worth 3k on a good day.

The part came in on Thursday so I left the car back to Audi yesterday, when I collected a few hours later I owed them €560 in total.

    €260 for the part
    €300 for labour

Even though they said it was €120 for the initial diagnostics carried out last Tuesday, they never put it on the bill or they forgot. So it could've been €680!! yikes!!

Now to sort out the NCT.
