Best Passat or other Similar Saloon for Circa 5K

Any recommendations on best Passat Petrol Models for circa 5K?

I reckon I will be looking at models from 2004 to 2006 at most.
    Possibly 2007 with higher millage.

It's mostly going to be used for urban journeys for a year or so - will put maybe 20K Km's on it.

After that for some weekend use as a second car - maybe doing 2K/3K Km's per year.
All in all - from what I've read, this kind of use, of mostly short urban journeys, would lend itself better to petrol than diesel.

I've seen some value in 2007 FSI models, but believe a Passat is better served by a more powerful engine.

I can stretch a K or 2 more - if necessary. But I'm not seeing the value in spending much more as, this car is not going to get too many miles put on it.

I'm tall, so need a car of this size.

Mondeos are worth a look, a 2 litre petrol titanium X is a nice place to be, comfortable, reliable and decently economical on a fun. They're also getting very cheap.

    Something like this maybe:

Very little to recommend about the Passats.

    Good suggestions both, thank you.

Passats in that age range don't seem to be great alright, ESP the petrol models.
    I'm thinking of looking elsewhere.

Any thoughts on an A4? Bit smaller alright, but less dated body.
Cheaper 06/07 models are available for about 6/6.5 K.

I do believe second hand audi's have a bad rep for service/repair costs however.

Good motor. Considered the most reliable, steadiest car in the US for the last 15 years.
Don't know why they're not more popular in Europe.

Knew people over there that had 250K miles on them and still going strong.

Subaru Legacy....bullet proof reliability, great engines, 4 wheel drive good in snow / ice etc.
