So I have a job interview.
Do people tell their manager, or do they just keep it on the down low till they need a reference?
I am thinking about saying it to my manager, just to eliminate the element of surprise if I were to be successful.

    I wouldn't

If you don't get the job then you are stuck there and they know you're actively seeking work elsewhere, could make for some uncomfortable times ahead.

I wouldn't, take some annual leave to attend the intereview and keep your cards close to your chest till you get a firm offer

But if you aren't successful then they would know you are looking for a new job. I would say nothing.

Personally, not until you need a reference. It would be prudent for your employer to start planning for your replacement and good bye to any bonus advancement or training.

are you on a contract that is expiring? that is the only scenario where you should consider it, and even then i wouldnt. An interview is only an interview, its nothing else until a job offer and contract end up in front of you.

an interview is only a chat to see if you fit their requirements and if they fit yours. Nothing more

Also, can you think of a reference other than your current employer?
